Does anyone know of any interesting novels in Spanish?

I suppose fiction would be preferred but I am not opposed to non-fiction. I am in need of a good book, but I also need to brush up on my Spanish (level is intermediate)....so why not use one stone??

All recommendations are highly appreciated! Thank you :)

I'm reading La Fiesta del Chivo by Vargas Llosa, and it's really good, though rather difficult. If you have a kindle, I'd highly recommend reading this blog post by a Duolingo user -- it talks about the challenges of reading in foreign languages, and one way to help overcome them:

Las batallas en el desierto (Battles in the Desert) by Jose Emilio Pacheco.

60 pages, aproximately.

The tender and sad story about a boy and his (platonic) love for his best friend's mother.

This book has inspired a song by the Cafe Tacuba band:

Oye Carlos porque tuviste que salirte de la escuela esta mañana.

Oye Carlos porque tuviste que decirle que la amabas, a Mariana.

En la escuela se corrió el rumor y en tu clase todo el mundo se entero.

Y en tu casa mama te pregunto si acaso fue tu hermano quien te indujo.

O peor aun, si fue Mariana quien te lo propuso.

Papa dijo este niño no es normal: Sera mejor llevarlo al hospital.

I would recommend "Verónica decide morir" by Paulo Coelho it could be Veronika but its been a while since I read it, lol. Anyways it's a short novel the language isn't all too hard their is also an English version and I'm sure you could find the pdf online. It's an interesting story don't let the title scare you it's very insightful. Also, for some reason I can't think of others but if any others pop into my head I will let you know. :)

Doña Bárbara by Rómulo Gallegos (former Venezuelan president). If you're interested, there's a telenovela based on the novel.

I really enjoyed El Curioso Incidente del Perro a Medianoche. Not too difficult, and I found it to be an interesting read.

Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes is the greatest novel to come out of the Spanish Golden Age, and it is generally regarded as a founding novel of Western literature. I have read it and it is amazing. I would personally recommend it to all.

I would not recommend it to anyone here unless the version is kind of simplified (like for children) and updated to modern Spanish.

I really like Cajas de Cartón be Francisco Jiménez. Good for intermediate level but an authentic text.

It is a series of short stories about one family. It is also available on audible.com if you want some listening practice. http://www.asehigh.org/apps/download/oaTKbUMIZU9mDBpbDfI0q1csTwH4fXW5YnHNO8oK95dNSOnR.pdf/CajasDeCartonText.pdf

Great Latin authors: Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Love in the Time of Cholera is a good one of his. Poets. Pablo Neruda and Gabriel Lorca. Tell me what you think if you try any of their books.

House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende; Ficciones by Jorge Luis Borges; The Storyteller by Mario Vargas Llosa; and Love in the Time of Cholera absolutely anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (but might wait until you've improved your Spanish for his books); The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

I suggest the novels Noli Me Tangere & El Filibusterismo both written by Jose Rizal. It's about the corruption brought about by catholicism and it's crooked spanish friars in the Philippines. A good novel to read if you like historical reality.
