I believe in other questions "ik sport" translated into "I play sports". It doesn't work here. Is that on purpose? "Work out" and "play sports" are definitely two distinct things in English, but I'm not catching the difference here.

"Sporten" is physical exercise. Hence in Dutch you say that you "sport" or that you "train" when you go to the gym. We don't have an expression like the English "to work out"/"a workout".
Hence "I work out" = "Ik sport" or "Ik train"
"A workout" is probably best translated as "een training"
