Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

I finally finished my tree!

It took me a year to finish my tree, but I did get interrupted a few times. Anyway, I am going to keep working until I can do all the activities in timed practice. I will try the reverse tree too, if I can figure it out. Can you switch back and forth every day? I really need to do more talking - are there any good online discussion activities? Keep working everyone!

Thanks to all in Duolingo - this is a great resource!

Congratulations! Don't worry about the time it took — mine took eighteen months, but by the end, I had a shiny golden 25 medal! :) Definitely do the reverse tree. I'd also recommend trying out Immersion, if you haven't already. It's what makes Duolingo free. :)

You can but it's a bit of a hassle. There's apparently user scripts out there to ease the process.

Oh man! I use a little-known browser called xombrero and had just written off the idea of using that script. But on a whim I decided to see if I could get it working and I did!

Thanks a lot this is great!

I saved it in ~/.xombrero/js/www.duolingo.com.js It was a long time ago but I don't think I had to make any other changes. (BTW Duolingo is adding http:// to that directory, it shouldn't be there but I don't know how to get rid of it)

Can you actually speak a language after you finish the tree?

Yes, but I am still slow at speaking because I do not have anyone to practice with often. However, my written understanding and writing is pretty good. When I was in Nicaragua, my listening understanding improved greatly in a very short time. I did not speak much there because I was working and there was a time crunch. I was able to go from a College level Spanish I class to a college level Spanish 4 class (skipped 2 and 3 by talking with the professor) with Duo and Language transfer studies.

Sort of. Duolingo is great for learning 1000-2000 words, but its not going to give you the vocabulary to fluently speak in every conversation. Rather, it gives you a large base for basic conversations, which you can then use to communicate and further add to your vocabulary. its still the best language learning site there is!
