I believe that the Netherlands could also be translated as 'de Nederlanden'

It could, though the area of "de Nederlanden" contains more than just the Netherlands. While technically not wrong, it is not something many people would say, just like people would not really say "I'm a citizen of the Benelux", or "I'm a citizen of Western Europe".

Thank you for your prompt reply. I do second that 'de Nederlanden' covers more than only the Netherlands. On the other hand 'hij kookt zijn schoen' isn't either something many people would say, but it is included in the test. In general I'm rather satisfied though by this Dutch class; as a Dutch speaker I wanted to test it first before recommending it to my foreign friends. Best regards, Stijn

"Wij zijn Nederlandse burgers" was the correction I was given. Isn't that more "We are Dutch citizens" more so than "We are citizens of the Netherlands.
