Done! I was not really planning to learn Esperanto, but now I think, why not? :-)

Do you mind me asking what the purpose of the survey is?

Well, the main purpose is just to get more people interested in Esperanto, or to let people know about it if they don't know about the upcoming course. Some smaller goals/purposes:

  • To see how many active users are interested in Esperanto. (On the course page, you can see many people who have signed up for the course, but we don't know if all of those users are necessarily active. Obviously this is far from a perfect count, many factors influence whether someone takes the survey but I did think it'd be nice to see the numbers.)

  • For fun, in one sense. It is always nice to see the opinions of Duolingo users, and feedback is a great way to build community.

  • For "comparison" so to speak. Esperanto had its original purposes, but why might people be learning it now?

  • Just to get some general feedback on the Esperanto course. There hasn't been much discussion of it lately (from my observations at least, and probably due to Turkish and Ukrainian) but I'm quite excited for it myself, so I just wanted to spark some discussion. :)

No problem with you asking, by the way, I'm glad to answer! :)

Done! I am really looking forward to the Esperanto course. It will probably be the first course to graduate to beta I'm really excited about, rather than just learning 'cause it's there ;D

So far I get on really well wth Duolingo's style of teaching, so while I've done quite a lot of study elsewhere, I am really looking forward to learning Esperanto here.

Done! I'm looking forward to this course! I'm fascinated by constructed languages, and I think it will be a great starter-second-language for my young kids who are doing Duolingo in homeschool.

Estas tre interesa, ke vi pensas, ke vi lernas pli facile per fremdaj lingvoj. Laŭ vi kial ĝi estas? Ĉu vi pensas ke ĝe estas ĉar vi malpli konfuzas lingvojn, kiujn vi uzas?

(kaj mi kredas, ke ĝi devus esti "mi ankaŭ esperas" kaj "per fremdaj lingvoj")

April 10, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/flootzavut

Jes, antaux estis tajperarojn duh kaj mi forgesis la vorton "fremda". Pardonu!

Belega ideo, sed mi dubegas, ke tio iam baldaŭ okazos.

April 11, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

I'm still undecided as to how much time and effort I will devote to Esperanto, but I'll likely give it a try. If the voice is of good quality, that would be a big plus. A big reason I gave up on Irish (for now) was that the audio wasn't as complete or as good as that of the other languages. I'm just wondering how much Esperanto will be of use to me in the real world compared to a natural language, given that there aren't any native monolingual speakers of Esperanto.

If you take part in the community, either on the internet or attending gatherings, you're likely to meet people with whom you have no other common language. And even if it's not the case, I have plenty of friends who speak English too, but Esperanto is so comfortable and natural between us that we can't imagine switching to English.

I read that if you take the IVONA Polish voice and use some character combinations in place of single letters to produce particular sounds, you can get a pretty accurate Esperanto voice. That link also mentions some Esperanto TTS voice libraries, but I'm not too sure if the Duolingo staff builds their text-to-speech software or imports it. So that was what I was figuring as to what they would do for the voice.

I remember hearing that in an interview with amuzulo, i think they said that they would use a Polish TTS (about 40 minutes in).

EDIT: The update to the incubator page says that they will probably be using human recordings, not TTS.

Done and thank you for giving Esperanto an opportunity to gain a few hundred thousands more speakers!

Honestly, Esperanto deserves to be spoken by tens of millions of people instead of a few hundred thousands.

I really hope the language gains through this website.

I probably won't start Esperanto here, I'm already using Lernu. :)

Why not try both? It would be a good idea, and you would learn faster...

Tried Lernu, but got bored. I think I simply prefer DL way more.

Anyway, I'm planning to return to lernu after I've completed the DL course.

This seems the ideal place to start the Incubus debate - I know real Esperantists groan at the mention because the words were reportedly spoken as written, rather than phonetically, but does it still colour perceptions of the language?
