17 skills de-golded in 1 day!?!

Well, this is discouraging. In my complete English-to-Spanish tree, 17 skills (lessons or units) went from gold (highest level of currency) to their base color in the course of about 28 hours of inactivity. One of them even went from 5/5 to 3/5 (two bars short of full). Has anyone else experienced this? Has Duolingo altered the review interval formulas?

Yeah I had 10 skills ungold in German. I'm guessing they tweaked the algorithm or something. Either that or a whole bunch of people were unlucky at once (I've seen a few posts saying something similar to yours).

Edit: By few it turns out I mean one, which you can find here. :P Although that may have been something different.

The same here. 21 skills within an hour, yesterday afternoon, only in Spanish. All other languages the same.

There's got to be something going on here...I've heard too many accounts recently of this happening to people. My own trees have become shadows of their former golden selves in a very short period of time.

It is now, but about 36 hours ago, I lost 17 skills all at once. I've been really trying the past two weeks to keep it golden, and that was quite discouraging. I'm hoping that this contest will bring me back out of the disaster-averting style of practice that I've been doing and into a more proactive learning style.

Yes, same with me in Italian. My tree is pretty reliably gold. I have 1-2 things ungild every few days. Often nothing degilds at all. At noon today all was gold except one. At 10 pm tonight I have 13 old skills ungilded. That's more than one an hour.

Yes, my German, Italian, and English trees/half-trees/three-quarter-trees experienced that, too..... (A total of approximately 40 units de-golded)

Now I'm reviewing the lessons :/

Another thing that happened me, is that *I only could got one unit to 5/5, after reviewing it 10 times!!!!!!! I did the last 8 times perfectly [didn't lose any heart]. So weird...

*is that sentence right?

I know one of the Pronoun skills in the French tree won't re-golden unless you review the lessons individually. That would be terrible if that's what's going on for you, seeing as you have so many units to re-golden. :( If I were you, I might try doing the individual lessons on the ones that you know aren't cooperating. Hopefully, it proves to be only a handful, because having to redo each lesson for 40 units would be beyond a nightmare.

I feel your pains. I had 18 ungild yesterday. There was one in the morning when I went to practice, and then nothing until late in the evening when 17 went all at once. I could have cried. But instead I just went and regilded about 10 of them, and stopped when I had a lesson go 45 questions and realized that I had reached my saturation point.

I have had the same problems. It's been so hard getting my previously gold tree back to gold. I finally did, but it took me quite a while to do. I hope that they don't de-gild this fast in the near future.

https://www.duolingo.com/SarahBecraft

This happens to me, I think because I often did a lot of skills in the same day. For laddering/reverse trees I'm only doing one skill a day at most to see if it helps. Same with re-gilding - I try to limit the amount of skills per day, so they hopefully won't all need to be strengthened at the same time later.

I've heard some people say timed practice is bad, but for me it seems to have been good - if I get 20/20 on a timed practice it seems like it lasts longer than if I do it un-timed. But maybe that's just wishful thinking.

I don't. I've been proceeding slowly doing 1-2 new lessons (not skills) a day, sometimes none, with a focus on review and keeping tree gold.

This is totally bizarre.

https://www.duolingo.com/SarahBecraft

Then my second guess is...

...A cat sitting on a keyboard caused mayhem somewhere. :P

In all serious though, hopefully at some point someone realizes that spending over an hour a day trying to keep your tree gold is not encouraging.

I think you are correct about timed practice. You see more questions, so you review more words (unless you miss a lot of questions on an untimed lesson, and end up doing more questions). And the bonus is that you get up to 20 XP instead of just 10.

I don't know... I hate complaining, but I have noticed this too. I haven't been able to move along with my lessons either. Yesterday I had to re-gild about eight or nine - I ended up getting almost 200XP from just re-gilding (which is nice, but I didn't get to my lessons).

Hmmm.... I had 11 skills de-gild yesterday whereas previously there had been only up to 2 or 3 de-gild each day. Is there any way to find out what is the review interval formula/algorithm? If there is a change, I'd be curious to the reasoning behind it. Is it a bug created when fixing something else? ... a change to help improve learning? .... a way to slow people down going through their tree so that they spend more time on Duolingo? :)

Duolingo, to my knowledge has not released that information. Many people have theories and ideas how to keep their tree gilded. That's it in a nutshell.

https://www.duolingo.com/Elizabeth261736

Thanks! I'm wondering if they take into account how well you do on the lesson or if it is just time based.

I think it is a sign from above ;) to spend less energy keeping the tree gold, and more energy improving one's Spanish, on Duo or elsewhere.

I have found that it helps to do the lessons instead of the strengthen part, and to do them without any mistakes, But yes I had more than usual to strengthen yesterday.

This morning I woke up to 9 skills that went from gold to 4/5 bars. I guess something must have been changed to the algorithm... It were skills all over my tree, from very old ones as the colours to the skill I only mastered 2 days ago. Well, let's just hope the tree stays golden a bit longer now.

https://www.duolingo.com/CanalZone

I have the same thing happen from time to time - often 10 or more skills de-gilded at once. The part that's hardest, given I am OCD on keeping my tree gold,is that it takes me a long time to get to the new lessons. I do think the review helps - but I wonder if I should spend less time polishing the old, and more time learning the new?

https://www.duolingo.com/johnlvs2run

I think the algorithm is too easy, because no matter how many mistakes are made, and how long the lessons take to get through, the skill always turns gold the first time. For example, my shortest lesson has been 17 answers and the longest 48, but all have turned gold regardless of how many misses.

For learning purposes, perhaps Duolingo should make the skill silver if it takes 30 or more answers, and bronze if it takes 40 or more answers. Also, each lesson should show how many answers it took to get through. This way we can see clearly which skills and lessons need more practice.

Update: I found a script that shows all the questions and answers at the end of each lesson. I make small flash cards for particular ones. If the screen advances, click the first dot at the bottom to go back.

This is not correct. It is possible to get a perfect score on the review (timed or untimed) and not get a currency upgrade (e.g., re-golding or moving from 3 bars to 4 bars). This has happened many times to me and it is normal. The "golding" or currency level is based on a composite of the currency values of the words associated with the skill.

I did not lose leaves, but I suddenly went from having translated 400 plus sentences of a 556 sentence article to 2. The good news is that I still have over 1100 XP for the mysteriously disappeared effort.

No, I ended up editing the whole article--it appears everyone else has lost interest. My theory is now that once the translations were accepted--their counter could not longer see my colour and so I slowly but surely disappeared. Oh well!

similar here. I keep practice 90XP per day for two days, but suddenly, I got 30 ungolden. I guessed that because I learn too many new classes without reviewing old ones. But still, there are too many ungolden~ then I spent a whole weekend to make them golden again. not sure whether I can really complete my trees~~

It happens if you took the test out of sections of your tree. Then suddenly a bunch of units will lose strength. Strengthen them a few at a time. Sometimes you need to strengthen a few times for full strength. Good luck.
