Vegetables: "Le verdure" oppure "la verdura"?

Does an italian say "Cucino la verdura" (singular) even when she cooks vegetables (multiple)?

I have noticed that translations of "vegetables" to "verdura" are accepted. Also, several hints say "verdura" as well as "verdure" when I am learning how to translate from "vegetables".

Are singular and multiple units of this noun interchangeable? Perhaps it's a matter of idiomatics?

Many thanks in advance.

Perhaps this will help. Apparently they say both.
