Masculine and Feminine words

Dia dhuit everybody,

I know that we should memorize the gender of each word we learn. However, are there some rules and some clues that can help us to define if a word is masculine or feminine ? For example, "mairtheoil" (beef) is feminine. Does the structure help to determine it's feminine ?

BTW, is there a percentage approximately accurate of masculine words over the feminine ones in Irish ?

Go raith maith agaith, Alexandre

This is from a PDF that's linked somewhere in the big Irish resources thread. It's not the alpha and omega of noun genders, just an approximate guide.
