Japanese Lesson 23: Dewa Arimasen - Ja nai

The title of the lesson bubble is actually "Objective Case Pronouns." But we won't... actually be covering those because in Japanese it's still the same pronoun words we've already learned.

However this section DOES have some handy sentences and other grammar points so we'll be learning those!!

So, there are no new vocabulary words today, but we'll be learning some different sentences and practicing more with negative desu.

Sentences

Not Me

actually there's a few ways to say this

Formal:
Not me
Watashi dewa arimasen.
わたし では ありません。
私ではありません。

Formal-ish
Watashi Ja arimasen わたし じゃ ありません。
私じゃありません。

Informal
Watashi dewa nai.
わたし では ない。
私ではない。

Informal
Watashi ja nai.
わたし じゃ ない。
私じゃない。

Note
There isn't much of a difference between "Dewa arimasen" and "Ja arimasen" ... I guess "Ja" is a contraction of "Dewa".

For example:
"Dewa" is to "Cannot" as "Ja" is to "Can't"

... just for clarification though "Dewa arimasen" and "Ja nai" mean "Is/am/are not"

Not you
Anata dewa arimasen.
あなた では ありません。

  • Anata ja arimasen
    あなた じゃ ありません。

  • Anata dewa nai.
    あなた では ない。

  • Anata ja nai.
    あなた じゃ ない。

Not him
Kare dewa arimasen.
かれ では ありません。
彼ではありません。

  • Kare ja arimasen.
    かれ じゃ ありません。
    彼じゃありません。

  • Kare dewa nai.
    かれ では ない。
    彼ではない。

  • Kare ja nai.
    かれ じゃ ない。
    彼じゃない。

No, not her.
iie, kanojo dewa arimasen.
いいえ かのじょ では ありません。
いいえ彼女ではありません。

-iie, kanojo ja arimasen.
いいえ、かのじょ じゃ ありません。
いいえ、彼女じゃありません。

-iie, kanojo dewa nai.
いいえ、かのじょ では ない。
いいえ彼女ではない。

-iie, kanojo ja nai.
いいえ、かのじょ じゃ ない。
いいえ、彼女じゃない。

I'm actually going to go ahead and stop now. This lesson will be broken into 3 parts. So this one is "De wa arimasen" - "Ja nai", Next will be the particle "ni" and then we'll wrap this section up with "-Te" form.

Until then!

Sort of unrelated but...

I post newer lessons in the General Duolingo thread to catch the attention of beginners... ... ... I'm wondering though if I shouldn't go ahead and switch the older lessons to the Japanese forum. Whatcha think?

There is no Japanese forum for English speakers, so you should keep it here. The other Japanese forum is for learners of English, not learners of Japanese.

Thank you for your input!! :D I had someone else suggest that I put it in the English for Japanese forum, and upon inspection I have seen some non native Japanese speakers in there so I've just been mulling it over since then. :)
