Hello,

Are there any Swedes here that recommend good Swedish movies or series? Watching a series / movie with subtitles I completely understand is a great way to gain a better understanding of the spoken language. Most preferably with Dutch subtitles, but English subtitles will do.

Tack så mycket!

Yes i'm aware of this version! I do prefer the swedish one though, language being one of the reasons.

If you have netflix there's actually a few things you can watch. There's Wallander, the original Swedish one with English subtitles. And a different kind of WWII film Simon and the Oaks. If you don't have nexflix well you know about them now.

You don't say what kind of TV or movies you like, so here are some that I enjoy.

My favourite Swedish TV series is Anno 1790, which is a historical crime drama. I also enjoyed the Arne Dahl crime series. The Bridge has already been mentioned - it's very good, but be aware that half of the dialogue is in Danish.

As for movies, I love Everlasting Memories, a period drama. The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared is very funny - it has dialogue as in Swedish and the narration in English. Easy Money is a very good crime drama. You, the Living is surreal and funny. Frostbite is a comedy-horror vampire movie. Arn the Knight Templar is a big historical epic, mostly in Swedish with some English.

Movies! I am not Swedish, but I am into cinema.

Let the Right One In is an incredible Swedish vampire movie - sweet but very spooky. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was originally a Swedish novel, and was made into a Swedish movie before it was adapted in America. That's a rather nasty crime thriller.

The next Swedish movie I plan to watch is We Are The Best, which is about some girls who form a punk band. It's directed by Lukas Moodyson (BEST NAME EVER), who has made a lot of real-lifey dilms.

The greatest Swedish director is Ingmar Bergman, if you're into the classics. He made the Seventh Seal, which you will probably have seen spoofed somewhere.

Oh I saw "Låt den rätte komma in" and yes it's a little sweet dark story.

It was also adapted to an American movie.

Yes - apparently, the American one was also rated well.

I was disappointed while watching how little of the Swedish I understood - I guess duolingo creates a bubble where every word you encounter is within your ability. However, it did remind me how sonorous and lilting Swedish sounds - the "accent" is really pronounced.
