What is your native language, or what language are you comfortable using? I think you can only learn English on duolingo from Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French. If you know one of those languages, you can start learning English by going to your account settings, look at the option "Learning language" and select the one that suits you. Hope that helps.

Thank you cloudhorizon, I don't know any of those, I Just can speak English a little, my native language is Persian. so I guess I just have to change my language to Spanish and then start learning English but how can I change my first language to something else? I went to account setting then on Account tab I click the link "Reset or remove languages" but then there is just "Spanish level 1" and I couldn't change my first language or add English. :( Thank again.

For the moment you can only learn English from French, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish. But Duolingo is working on a way to let users add the languages they want so I guess it'll be possible for users to add Persian (from English) but also English (from Persian).

I was speaking about adding a language to the list of languages (to the database) that you can learn (from another X language for which Duolingo as an interface for - actually only english, french, portuguese, german, italian and spanish). Not about how to add a language (English in your case), from the list of available languages, to the languages that you are learning in Duolingo.

So currently you're on the english interface of Duolingo, so you can't setup to learn english.

[I can't reply to your post, so I do it here]

Go to the "settings" panel (upper right corner) - or hover on the flag on the upper right then click on "more" - there you can change the "Learning Language" field. But you'll have to learn english from french, portuguese, german, italian or spanish so you need to know one of this languages.

Thank you so much jrikhal, I opened setting page and in Learning Language menu I have these choices: 1- I want to learn Spanish (I know English) 2- I want to learn German (I know English) 3- I want to learn French (I know English) 4- I want to learn Italian (I know English) 5- I want to learn Portuguese (I know English) 6- Je veux apprendre l'anglais (je parle francia) 7- Quero aprender Ingles (eu sei Portugues) 8- Quiero aprender ingles (yo se espaniol) 9- voglio imparare inglese (io parlo italiano)

witch one should I select? I think I should select one of them among 6,7,8,9. right?

My first language is Persian, I don't understand anything of Spanish, German, French, Italian, or Portuguese. I just know a little English, and I want to improve it through this site, (that seems to be a great site). but there is an policy that bother me, why I can't learn English through an English interface, why should I have to change the interface language to something else to start learning English. Now I change the language of the site to Spanish (I guess) and I have no idea what does these links and buttons mean. boring :(

Because Duolingo is made to learn one language (for you) from another one because it's based on translation. So to translate from a language X to english (in your case) you need X no be different from english.

Once again it's not trying to learn you spanish but to learn you english from spanish. BECAUSE, based on translation, if you want to learn english here you have to know one language from which, for the moment, Duolingo offers to learn english. But come back after 9th october or maybe in january then see/help/participate to the "learning english from persian".
