Translation? Page proforma?

For part of my learning I'm trying to do my own translations of kids books that I bought in Portugal.

Is there any special set up people use on WORD (or Open Office) when writing side by side translations?

I tried making 2 columns on a page, but it didn't really work....what do the experts do?
