New German voice
Finally a male voice! I like it!
How do I select the female voice? I'm getting frustrated at this point with the new voice. Its not as clear as the female one. I know in the real world I am likely to encounter lots of varied voices and accent subtleties. But at this point I feel a little like I'm trying to learn German from a drunken sailor. Well maybe not quite that bad, but frustrating all the same. It's more the abrupt change at a point I felt I was starting to make some real progress. I feel this should be an option, and not forced test groups.
I found I've needed to go back to the first lesson to get used to the new voice. I guess it will make my comprehension stronger in the long run.
I like it too. Caught me off guard though. I'm getting a mix of male and female. I think it's good practice to mix it up a bit. :)
Maybe you're in a test group? I still get the woman. Was there a setting, or does it switch back and forth? Is this on the phone app or website?
It looks like there is a new test, it is called "multi_voice_tts_experiment". I'm in the group titled "female"--so I assume no noticeable change for me, either. I would also be interested in the mechanics of it (if it switches back and forth, etc). It sounds nifty!
Cool! Thanks! :)
btw, my group is "both", and indeed I'm getting both the female and the male voices.
I am also in "female" but I would really like to hear the man's voice. I logged out of my account about ten times and started German again in a get started account and check the duo.user.attributes.ab_options log. Many of the experiments change between true and false as well as a few other but it was always 'female'. Looks like only people using duo for awhile get it. I could be wrong.
I have only done the website today, so I don't know if it's on the phone app. Some of the website lesson was with the same female voice, but some of it was with a male voice. I guess I'm in the test group.
I just did a lesson and was surprised to hear a male voice. It is randomly switching between the female and the male after about 2-3 questions. I do not like the sound of the guy though :)
The pronunciation of the new voice it terrible... I had "Das Essen" and it said it like "Das Es-essen".
I have both of the voices and I like the new male one. Training your audio perception isn't fun with just one clear voice, imo. Plus, I find the male voice oddly soothing.
I was quite startled at first, along the lines of "Whoa, I thought I was doing my Duolingo; am I on Memrise by mistake?" But I do like it, I think the male/female contrast is very important for the audio portion and I think it's a great addition to the course.
I like it! Sure was surprised. I hope ultimately they offer three options: Male, Female, and alternate between both voices (or even have both voice clips available to mouse over so you can hear the same sentence in both voices). Makes for better listening practice if you are hearing more than just one voice all the time.
I don't like the new male voice. It's much less clear than the regular female voice. :(
I think it's actually recorded at a lower bitrate than the female. It makes it much more difficult to understand.
i agree. i do not like it. it is scratchy, it repeats syllables in "essen" to "essensen" and often times completely unintelligible. the female voice is very clear. i am hoping they can fix it.
The new male voice is much worse than the female :( I have to repeat voice recognition sentences many time, so I fail all my timed practices :(
I like the male voice. At least he gets er and ihr right. The female voice sounds the same also she annoys me. Just my opinion.
Is it just me... or does the new male voice sound rather like Rainn Wilson a la The Office?
That's the weird thing; I didn't set anything... I just started hearing a male voice during this morning's future tense exercise totally out of the blue.
You can't set it. It looks like some people are part of a test group and some people aren't.
I'm in the alternation group, and I really like. They have slightly different pronunciations and maybe even slightly different accents (that is for a native speaker to say). Not only is "er" and "ihr" clearer with the guy, as someone else has noted, but finally "ist" does not sound like "list." OTOH, "Länge" sounded like "Linge" instead of the "Laynge" I've always heard (and not just here).
The quality of the "male" voice is terrible. I guess he was chewing his microphone during recording sessions.
I absolutely hate the new German male voice. It is too deep and so much harder to understand that the previous female voice with her extra clear diction. Please bring the lady back or, at the very least, allow us users to select the voice each person prefers.
I find the male voice very hard to understand even on the slow voice speed mode. Sounds like has has a mouth full of marbles. I find it frustrating that with some words I am guessing what the male voice is saying and then getting the answer wrong. It takes alot of the enjoyment from the learning with pointless repetitions from a voice-over who has had too much Weissbier.
Whilst having different voices should be a good thing, I find the male voice all but impossible. It's gurgly, and the pronunciation is appalling to the point of being incomprehensible. Sometimes I have to play speech on the slow setting over and over again, and even then I can't always work out what he is saying. But at least the last mispronounced phrase I had made me smile - "Sie laufen mit ihren Enten" (it should have been Eltern, of course).
Perhaps it's only in the later lessons. I'm on "Future 2". I've only got 14 lessons / topics to go till I finish my tree.
i don't like the new male voice at all. it's so low! it makes it really difficult to learn new words when the voice saying them is this low. i always feel compelled to repeat sentences in the same intonation as the voice on duolingo, so this baritone definitely sets a challange.
I have a very difficult time understanding the new Male voice. It seems that some like him, but I don't. I would appreciate a way to switch between the two to fit my preference.
Glad you like it, but I would like to have the option to switch back. :( I liked the female voice better.
I loathe the male voice so much I find myself avoiding practicing my German just so I don’t have to hear that creepy ❤❤❤❤. I wish there were a way to select strictly female recordings for German.
