It's actually short for "halvtredsindtyve" or "Two and a half times twenty", but everyone would say it in the way of Duolingo

It comes from the old "halvtredje gang tyve" = 2½ x 20 = 50.

Unlike the Duolingo person who verifies the answers, I read the notes on numbers and ages and took seriously the fact that Danes use the word “år” to mean “years old” as a contraction of “ar gammel”. So when I do exactly what is in the notes it gets marked wrong. Frustrating or what?
