How is "had come" different from "came"?

It's a different tense. "had come" is past perfect and "came" is simple past.

I wrote the exact same sentence without the capital letters and it was not accepted. The proposed options do not allow me to report it.

You should be able to report anything as a free text ("other problem"). However, there are quite often minor spelling mistakes that we tend to oversee even when comparing our own answers to the facit several times...unless you are 102% certain everything else was correct, I would give it another look... ;-)

For whatever it's worth, the correct reply is listed as "Hed come from England," although it accepted my answer.
