you'd be right, in terms of translation - but in simple cases like these, duo prefers a literal translation: hence, you'll need "an american" & not just "american" here :D

To be grammatically correct, you should do it.. but nobody will look at you weirdly if you just say "Amerikaan" for a woman ;)
