Can anyone tell me whether Danish has a way of distinguishing between smaller and larger settlements, as in English town and city? Or does 'by' refer to both?

By generally refers to a place where people live, but you can always build words with it. New York City might be a storby (big city) whereas Orange, VT, a town of ~900 people in rural Vermont, might be a landsby (country town or village). You can translate it as both city or town, but context should help.
