Click the microphone and say: can't click
This happens fairly often and is very annoying. I do want to do the speaking exercises but I can not click on the microphone button sometimes. I am attaching an image to show what happens. http://imgur.com/S0rTQO5
I have used duolingo for many months and I appreciate the option it provides for free and effective language learning. I also know that free means that I am paying in some other way. Ongoing testing of new features helps develop new options for pay products for the future. That's OK. I am the guinea pig and I know it. For all these months, there are problems related to sound, Different problems always appear, either because a new feature is being tested on me or an upgrade to flash or some other component has yet to be handled in the code. My current problem, which is exactly what the original poster shows in his attached image, cannot be avoided by changing browsers, clearing the cache, changing operating systems, disabling ad blockers or rebooting. It is common to all four desktop browsers I tested and both win7 and Mac OSX. The Chrome version has its own bugs. The new and different speech recognition module is frustrating and unusable in its own strange ways. I could turn off the microphone but I think it is important to practice speaking the language. The problem(s) are not there on Android or iOS. My work involves computers and I have plenty of devices here for testing. I also have an excellent broadband connection. So, since I want to learn at my desk, I found a solution. I hope it is a temporary fix. I downloaded a free program for Windows called BlueStacks. It is then possible to run Android on a Windows PC. It took me all of 10 minutes to set it up. In case you are wondering, I am not associated with BlueStacks and really wish I could avoid using it. It works. The Android version of Duolingo on my PC. Now, I no longer find myself stuck in the middle of the same exercise over and over again.
Thank you very much for such a thorough answer - I have been doing the same thing, and the waste of time is exhausting and frustrating, I spend more time testing a new browser than I do learning. So, since it is not just me, and I really "get" that we are all guinea pigs (oh, let's get fancy and puff ourselves up and say we are "beta-testers" lol) so I am going to roll with it - there are so many other good features with this program, I can just keep myself busy with them until they get their audio issues together. The new business on Chrome!! It is the exact opposite of the original problem - the mike clicks on and immediately says "Nope, can't hear you" - Ay, ay, ay!!
Anyway, thank you again for giving such a detailed answer and a solution, should one choose to use Bluestacks. Totally Lingot worthy! :)
The microphone worked fine for a few weeks but now it freezes frequently, usually when nearly through of course. Frustrating, cannot move forward, back, only way to get out is to quit, then the effort is lost. Lucky that a do not know THE word in Spanish. I am on a Toshiba laptop, windows 8.
Exactly!!! Same here. Gerald, does your screen have the green "I don't want to use the microphone" option on the bottom left? When your mike freezes, if you click that, I have found it gives you the happy "ding!" and moves you to the next question. I am on a MacBook Pro Laptop, so I do not know if it will work on the Toshiba, but give it a try. (oh, and is THE word you are looking for "jodido"? LOL - I actually found it by accident, and died laughing because I was a tad irritated, to say the least)
