My tree was golden, and I was happy...My first year on Duolingo

I logged on this morning thinking, "Oh, wait. Is it a year now?" Time flies abnormally fast around these parts. For myself, it's my own proof of just how much I love languages, because I rarely commit a year to anything worth my while.

Last year, mentally exhausted and frustrated with the class that was Spanish II, I decided to try Duolingo for Spanish (which I had been using for French). Quickly, there was a connection here that I had missed through vocabulary lists and conjugation charts. I climbed up my Spanish tree, and upon reaching the top, I realized I didn't hate the language at all, I just hated the way I was taught. Theoretically, I figured if I had been able to open Spanish's door, then the rest were a quick step away...

Most of you know the story from there. I've completed five trees in a year, Spanish (B2 in reading/writing, B1 in speaking), Portuguese (B1), French (B1 in reading, A2 in writing/speaking), Dutch (same as French), and Irish (A1). I kind of wish I had done more (in terms of skill level) but for not hardly knowing two languages to having foundational knowledge in 5 and a couple others, I can't really complain.

But, languages aren't the be-all and end-all for me. I have met many incredible users, and I stuck around a lot longer than I would have because everything is better with a friend (or thirty). Ironically, I had originally intended to go for an digital arts major, but now, I realize that only Linguistics (sociolinguistics) can play my heartsong without messing up any notes. So, to the user who said I shouldn't call myself "AlexisLinguist" if I wasn't really one, I was merely declaring my future. :)

It is still hard to believe the way a year has changed things, bringing new friends, new languages, and a new path. And to think, before it all, my Spanish tree was golden, and I was happy. Or so I thought.

Thank you to Baby_Duo, s-g-miller, palocortado, writchie4, Moomingirl, Lrtward, Usagiboy7, AnIsAPan, MaeeSafaee, Lennart, AlsEenPoffertje, pinkodoug, wataya, Oleron3, 4arthur, Hohenems, jkwilson31, Jayway223, Mah_Space_Owl, and GeniusJack for tagging along--whether you thought you would or not.

And a special thanks to Samsta: I will never forget those first words of encouragement you gave me.

Thanks, Duolingo.

Alexis, I can't believe it's been a year. You've been a wonderful, bright addition to the community, and I'm glad you're around (mainly because I enjoy correcting you so much ;D). Good luck with your newly chosen path!

Felicidades, Alexis! It is amazing what you can accomplish when you put your mind to it. Thank you for all of the help you gave me when I was first starting out on the site. You got me really into Immersion, and encouraged me every step of the way.

Happy Duoversary to a great person.

You're very welcome, Alexis! :D I never really did think that we would become friends, but I'm so happy that we did! :) I'm pretty jealous though because you finished 5 trees in a year, while I only finished one. :P

It's been awesome getting to know you, Lexi! Congrats on a year! It seems like yesterday when I first recognized you on the forums...and thought you were a boy, of course. :P However, I never thought we'd become friends!

And it's been a huge pleasure to have been with you on your journey! You're very welcome! But no, it's you who should get the thanks.

First of all, thanks for being an awesome moderator and helping out the community. You may not be mod anymore, but you definitely made a difference. You deserve a round of applause. :)

Also, thanks for being an awesome motivator in finishing my French tree (and its reverse), my Spanish tree (and the French one) as well as my Italian (haven't been working on that lately, but I plan to go back there), my Greek (which is currently only available for Greek speakers, but I can't wait for the English one), and currently my Dutch (which I gave up but have taken up again just to give it another shot and because I'm a teensy bit jealous of your Dutch owl). You've been one of the first people I've ever befriended on Duolingo and you've been with me all the way. I can't believe that it's almost been a year for me as well since I've come to Duolingo (I found the app May 5).

Finally, thanks Alexis, Queen of Lexington, Master Lurker, whatever you want to be called -- for being a really good friend (and for the shout-out, too!). You've been helpful, funny, and pure awesomeness. You'll always be known as Lexi to me. So become a linguist, keep studying more languages and never stop conquering trees. :)

Sincerely,

Bee :)

April 26, 2015

Thank you, Bee! :) Neither I, you just appeared one day, and the rest is history. ;) I can't believe it's been almost a year for you...time flies like heck. Get that Dutch owl for sure!

HOWEVER: I noticed a typo in your post!

(Well, OK...so I have to pull your leg just a little bit even when being serious.) Anyhow, back to the point! Yay, huge congratulations on a year, Lexi.

I struggled to commit to anything (including languages, which I have always been interested in) before coming here too. It's great that so many of us have found in Duolingo a way to get a great foundation in the languages we want to learn. That then pushes us on to bigger and brighter things.

You are one of the very first people I connected with here, and you are one of the reasons that I now look forward to coming here every day to study. You have gone from the category of 'language friend' to just plain 'friend'.

Congratulations on your Duoversary, tweeling. :D

An inspirational story! You are a fantastic community presence and I'm very glad you stuck around.

I've found duolingo the only tool so far in getting me to stick with a language. I'm a language magpie, always getting distracted by a new bright shiny object and switching/starting new languages and dropping old ones when they get hard. That may be a temptation with DL, but in fact I've found the opposite. It makes me want to keep at it and really improve.

DL is a great place. In part because of people like you!

Congratulations, Alexis! You've been a great help to me and many others, and, I suspect, an inspiration to many more. Best wishes always with your ongoing studies, whatever they are and wherever they may be conducted. I say always because I know you'll never stop! :-)

Congratulations! :D Seeing you and others so dedicated to studying languages is part of what inspired me on my own unexpected journey here, since I originally just came here to review my Spanish. Thank you!

Spanish: B2. I took it in school or 3 years but I didn't learn nearly as much as I have here on Duo. Latin: B2 in reading/writing, I plan on contributing to the course whenever it comes into the incubator. Took it for 2 years. German: A2. My mom is from Munich but I can mostly just understand what people are saying. I have A2 in Turkish and Italian. I definitely plan on doing the Russian course when it comes out. I aspire to learn Mandarin and Arabic as well. I'll do the German or Portuguese tree after doing the reverse for Spanish. I'll also delve into French before I go there in the summer of 2016 with my family. Needless to say, I love languages with a passion and Duolingo is one of my favorite websites.

You started as learning French, but soon branched into many other languages. May your language knowledge continue thanks to the help of Duolingo.

I actually started with Spanish :P You can count German too if you want, since I spoke that until I was about 3 or 4. But Spanish is the first language that I have actively learned. French will have my attention soon. I worked on Latin not only for the language itself, but also for the way it makes other languages easier (from Europe). May your language knowledge continue as well! Buena suerte, Glueck, Удачи, ve iyi şanslar!

HI Alexis, How you know which level you are in the different languages? How do you measure the level?

My own estimations, some online tests. Nothing serious until I take an exam or two for Spanish sometime over the summer.
