Ved huset is wrong? Why? :(

nær huset = near the house

ved huset = by the house

What's the difference between stiller, saetter and laegger or are they interchangeable?

Pretty much the same nuance as put, set & lay it

    Why not "putter"?

This is a really unnatural sentence in English

In English it would always be "the police place", not "places". I think the sense of it is that "the police have evidence that the man was near the house [when the crime was committed]". In English we might say "evidence places the man near the house".
