switching between mother tongue and e.g french

Today out of curiosity mainly, as I wanted to see what kinds of sentences people learning my L1 (English) were being subjected to, I decided I'd test out "learning" English on DL. I actually think it might be quite useful as that way we get to use the french functionally as we are reading instructions etc in french. I'd be interested to know if anyone else does this and how/if at all useful they have found it.

I tried it with Spanish it was much harder because everything is arranged in a different order for the way a Spanish speaker learns English for example the imperative was thrown in near the first part of the tree which made it tougher but there were some Spanish words I read on there which I don't remember seeing on the actual Spanish course, also I like reading the Spanish forum

That sounds like a great idea, I am going to have to try it.

I have thought about doing this for Spanish but haven't taken the plunge. But if you try it, keep the rest of us updated.

I did it quite a while ago and completed all the shortcuts, that's why I'm level 10 (I think) in English. There are a lot of words that the Spanish course doesn't teach.

I'm a native French speaker, and I am here to perfect my English and learn German from English. And honnestly, the current site design doesn't make it easy to switch.

I have tried it and found it kind of boring to go back to the beginning lessons. maybe i'll try testing out of them. Also, i lost my streak in my spanish learning tree because for a day I was "learning" english!

I believe it is a very important part of the process here on duolingo and can add great value to one's language learning strategy. I'm doing this as I learn Spanish. The REAL payoff, IMHO, is when one logs in as a Spanish native speaker learning English ... and then translates English documents into Spanish.
