There are actually three correct translations: a) "I am eating some coffee crepes" b) "I am eating crepes with coffee" c) "I am eating crepes at the café"

In English a location must always be specified with 'a/an' or 'the'. In the same way you can't say you're making sandwiches in kitchen, you need to say 'in the kitchen'. I hope that helps.

Why does it have to be "the" and not at "a" cafe?

"au" is a contraction of "à" + "le." Therefore when talking about the place, "at the café" = "au café." There is no contraction for "à" + "un" therefore "at a café" = "à un café."
