Lost my 212 days streak :(

I just lost my 212 days streak yesterday. I was really looking forward to completing 365 days. But somehow I just forgot to practice German yesterday. I am really disappointed now. It was the streak that kept me going. How do I retain my interest in learning German? Any suggestions would help a lot.

Just dont worry. You made it there once, you can do it again! Your real motivation should be learning and being able to use German well.

srcn is right. The user pinkodoug lost a 3xx-streak and now he's in his 400s again. You can do it as well!

A quick and dirty solution, which is neither visible for other people nor persistently saved. It only changes your view! Use Firefox or Google Chrome. Press F12 on your keyboard. Now a window at the bottom of your page opens containg the HTML code. (If it doesn't show HTML, but something else, click on the tab with the label "HTML".) Click the icon with box and the arrow (the second from left) Hold your mouse over the streak button. Now you can see in the HTML box somehing like that:li class="streak" data-placement="bottom" title="" data-toggle="tooltip" data-original-title="1 day Streak" Click into the HTML text and change the number "1" to "212" (or whatever you want). Then click on the + in front of li .... Now you can see a few lines below a single "1". Change this also to 212. Close the developer's toolbox. Now your website should display your old streak again. But as I said: These manipulations are not saved and only you can see it. When you reload the site, the streak will be shown again as 1 day.

It's pretty obvious you're very motivated to learn! The number was the smallest part of your enthusiasm. Just carry on as you are :)

It's not that simple. You'll feel the burn when you lose a big streak. It made me quit for a long time.

I would be disappointed to lose my streak too. But what really motivates me is my desire to learn fluent German. You are at Level 14 and climbing! Don't stop! You can't lose the knowledge you have already gained. So just keep on going. You are a valuable member of the Duolingo community.

Learning a language is just like working out. When you run a 5K, you look at how long you took and you say "This was good, next time I'm going to do better". You made it to 212, now try to beat your record.

Mist! Ich tut mir leid. du hast ein lingot! (einen?)

May 4, 2015

I think it would be einen because ingot is masculine in German and it's accusative.

Richtig: "Es tut mir leid. Ein Lingot fur dich!" Aber das war sehr nett von dir!

I am very sorry for your loss. I have lost my streak a couple of times, too, and so I know the disappointment. My advice:

Use your lingots to buy a streak freeze. Yes, you must buy it in advance. If you ever have to use it, buy another immediately. You can only do this on your computer - it is not available on the mobile version.

Always make sure that you are connected to a network before midnight in the time zone where you initially registered for Duolingo. This is important if you use a mobile device to work offline. You can work offline on your mobile device, but the data won't be uploaded to Duolingo until you connect to the Internet.

Finally, sometimes the cache on the computer gets corrupted, and even though you complete your lesson, Duolingo does not record your success. I have lost 5 or 6 streaks because of this. You finish the last exercise of a segment and it is marked complete. You expect to choose "Continue" and see the computation of your progress, the addition to the streak, etc. Instead the "continue" button is gray and you can't do anything except repeat the lesson. Caution - it may happen again if it happens once. To avoid this, before starting a Duolingo session, log out of the application and close the Duolingo window. Then clear browser cache and cookies for Duolingo. The method of doing this depends on your browser. After you have cleared Duolingo cookies and cache, then log into Duolingo and complete your lesson. At the end of the lesson, log out, clear cache. I have reported this problem to Duolingo at least 25 times, but they haven't fixed it yet.

This happened to me as well and I stopped for months. Streaks are not a good way to motivate people due to their all-or-nothing nature and the inevitable disappointment when the streak is broken. (In my case it happened due to a technical problem.)

I've done that several times. Shrug. It makes you feel philosophical and sophisticated. Then start collecting Lingots! Here are another 5.

I really feel for you. I hope you don't loose your interest in german.

However, this might actually be an oppportunity. Since you are not so attached to Duolingo anymore, and I presume that, by now, you must have completed the tree, you can try different resources, such as the DW.de interactive courses, the podcasts, the youtube learning series and stuff like that. Memrise is a good resourse as well.

Anyway, keep your chin up. Cheers!

I fall off the train (sometimes for several days or even a week), but always manage to hop back on.

It's a natural ebb and flow I think. Sheesh. Be a bit easier on yourself!
