And Just Like That a Streak is Gone ....

Lost my 196 days streak, feel a little empty inside but also a bit of relief. I knew this day was going to come and I am proud to say I am still keeping it together and not flipping tables.

It would be nice though to have it displayed on our profile, our "longest streak", so that users can work even harder to surpass it. In general, it would be a place where that accomplishment could always be remembered.

Yes, that's too bad, but very good work and something to be proud of! That's a good idea!

To someone from the organisation: "Can we have a "longest streak", please? :)

I agree with latkeen. It would be very encouraging to have a longest streak on your profile!

Agree so much with this! Would make it feel as if it wasn't lost for anything when that day comes!

That just happened to my friend, vsveatch. He had a 410-day streak and shed tears. Life goes on. :)

sorry you lost your streak. it happened to me at day 87 and I had to start over, but I made it to 425 by always keeping a streak freeze in place. Check the lingot store and buy one - buena suerte

It would work better if you could buy more than one. Some of us occasionally have to go off net for days.

Okay, do I show how quickly I can get through a tree or have the longest streak ever. Well, I do want to learn the language. Anything I can do to improve my chances should help. Dedication, habit, and practice. Streak me. I lost several streaks to begin and learned about the streak freeze. Had a painful broken tooth the other day. Streak freeze saved me. Back at it and what is more important now is to just practice every day. There is always someone out there that is better. Practice with dedication. Love this site. I tell everyone about it.

Ha! I know what you mean. Im only on day 36 and feel like I'm a bit dependent on adding another day, especially if I know I am away from wifi connections! Well done on the 196 day streak - maybe a lingot will help?

It's just a number, it's not how much learned! You've always got your level. Honestly, my streak (488) is more burden than motivation, when I hit 500 I'm going to let it go!

https://www.duolingo.com/Elmono23

Me too. And now that they no longer give lingots for every ten days of maintaining your streak, there is not as much motivation as before to maintain it. So I agree with you, 500 seems like a good place to quit worrying about maintaing my streak.

There is an A/B test going on for not getting lingots for your streak. Some people are in the test and others are not. I am in the test. :-( Now I don't get lingots for my streak.

Sorry to hear that, but know that you can build another one over time. As for your longest streak suggestion, many of us like it (and it's been suggested before). For now, you can put it on your profile page until Duolingo finally gets around to adding it.

Take a screen shot, and use it to create a dazzling desktop background or something. I lost a streak a while back, I don't remember the number. At this point I'm only focused on language acquisition, vocabulary retention, etc.

That would be pretty amazing. I just lost my 20 day streak (I know its not much) and i am heart broken. And also, that will give people motivation to beat their last streak. Have a lingot!

I'd rather see total days active, than a streak, and feel it would be more motivating.

No, to me, a streak is more motivating. But it would nice to see both.

I am learning Spanish for my trip to Cuba and don't expect to be able to go on with my streak there. Already looking forward to that point, because THAT will be the achievement.

I lost a 60+ day streak last summer (2014) because I messed up after finishing a lesson on the app (I was used to doing Duo on the laptop). Now that I'm a little over 300, I too find my streak to be a bit of a burden—but it's also a terrific motivator not to let one day slide, which would become another and then another… Practicing every day has really improved my skills. Now if only Duo would go back to awarding lingots for every ten days of maintaining a streak.

What a guy

I had a friend who started the Spanish course, and kept making progress for about 3 weeks, until she accidentally missed a day and lost her streak.

The streak, coins and lingots provide great motivation to keep learning, but as far as gamification goes, the streak is a double-edged sword, with a punishment way too abrupt and unforgiving in my opinion.

Know how you feel., but you can always earn an even longer streak, so "just keep swimming." A shorter streak than yours I lost last year--just one day short of half a year--and it was disappointing, for sure. (I may lose my current streak later this week, we'll see.)

https://www.duolingo.com/Batrachophile

Grandma's friend's uncle's mom's house??? Let's see; if your grandma is 60 then presumably her friend is 60 as well. Her uncle would probably be in the 85 year old range which would make his mom about 110. That's pretty impressive that a 110 year old owns a house!

Plus, wouldn't the friend's uncle's mom just be the friend's great-aunt or something?

Why not selectable streaks, total days, max. streak, but also: percentage of days active! It should be as challenging to keep up 100%, or get the percentage as high as possible in the 90% region, without the extreme penalty of losing the complete streak.

When I first started Duolingo I built up a 70 plus day streak and lost it because of computer problems. It was kind of dispiriting, but you can always start another streak. I'm now at 317 and counting. While I was rebuilding my streak I worked on getting my level up, and did the reverse tree. Taking the English from Spanish course will help build up your Spanish as well as help you build your streak back up.

I agree - I lost a 362 streak -less than a week off a year, which I think was the problem. It loomed very large. I'm glad now though, I work to maintain a streak, good totals build quick lingots (also no use except personal goals and achievements) , but if it goes, it goes - que sera sera.No pressure. Just got my golden tree today -that was a bigger buzz! ;-) A longest streak total somewhere on the page would be a great idea.

I too recently had a mishap which resulted in me losing my 156 day streak (longest for me). It has made me take a week off of learning each day, I think that adding such a feature would be great for duolingo (at least in the profile section). Would also create a new goal to reach so you could beat your own longest streak.

No lingots for streaks for some users? How does one earn them then once they've completed the learning tree? I am a 'lucky user' I guess as I still earn them for 10 day streaks. I wonder though, why the streak freeze and double or nothing purchase options aren't offered in the store with the mobile version?

https://www.duolingo.com/bdawsn

I have a streak freeze that I have never used. I just got 20 lingots for my 200 days. I have already spent them on everything I can except progress tests. They keep piling up. I used to burn them up on heart refills but now only the mobile app uses the broken hearts. Speaking of the mobile app, if you are without a computer for a few days, use the mobile app to keep the streak. A word of warning: it is way too easy! Don't use it too much if you want to learn.
