Why does it translate to "between the vegetables" and not "among the vegetables"?

To me "between the vegetables" is incorrect unless there only two of them. I can't tell if this is what is meant or not.

I appreciate its not a literal translation but wouldn't most people say " i can see a banana" rather that "i see a banana"? In the UK anyway
