What is the difference between förut and innan?

  • förut = earlier or previously
  • innan = before [phrase], e.g. innan jag går till jobbet = before I go to work

Thank you so much for explaining it like this. For some reason I was not putting it together that previously is a good translation for förut

I'm really not seeing the difference

It's like in English, really. You say "I wash my hands before dinner", but not "I wash my hands previously dinner". The innan needs a complementary phrase (or an implied one). But förut just means "at an earlier point in time".

I'll have to study that more. Tack
