Surely 'slottet' is commonly used to mean the palace?

    There is a difference in meaning between "et slot" and "et palads".

    "Et slot" is used for palaces/castles in Denmark/Western Europe. Here is what comes up if you search for "slotte" on Google Images:

    "Et palads" is mostly used for more exotic palaces:
