Announcing Classroom Practice

The Duolingo Dashboard now allows you to start a short practice session for your classroom! Click the “Classroom Practice” button to launch a session that is tailored to your classroom’s overall language level. classroom_practice

Many teachers use Duolingo in class by projecting their screen so everybody can see the questions, and this feature is meant to facilitate that activity. There are several ways of completing the classroom practice session:

  • Ask your students to translate the sentence they see, and type in the answer yourself. This encourages them to speak without having to worry about spelling.
  • One teacher told us she makes one student the designated teacher - that student is in charge of deciding who gets to answer the question, and of typing in the answer.
  • If you have a small class, you can have students (or teams of students) take turns answering questions.

The classroom practice session is meant to go easy on equipment - we have increased the contrast and eliminated listening and speaking exercises so you won’t have to rely on laptop speakers.

Let us know how you use Duolingo in class! We’re looking forward to reading your comments on the new classroom practice session. Happy teaching!

============

A quick note: Classroom practice is currently only available for classrooms that satisfy the following conditions:

  • the classroom must have a single learning language (you can change this in the classroom settings)
  • at least one student in the classroom must have started learning the classroom language, i.e., must have earned at least one XP in the language. (We'll have a way to launch sample lessons very soon!)
  • the teacher must be using the dashboard in the same language as your students. (We realize that this may be an issue for ESL teachers whose students are learning English from a variety of languages. Sorry about that! We'll try to address this soon.)

Thanks for the update and the level of detail! :)

Sounds amazing! However the button is grey for me :/

I took a peek at your account and it looks like most of your students are learning English from Portuguese. Our current implementation of the classroom practice session is hesitant to generate a session for you if you are using Duolingo in a different language from your students, because it's not clear if the instructions should say "Traduza esta frase" or "Translate this sentence", for example. If you change your user interface language to Portuguese here and refresh your dashboard, you should be able to start a classroom practice session!

I'm sorry for the inconvenience! We are aware that ESL teachers are a special use case with needs that the dashboard may not address completely, so we're grateful for any feedback you have on how Duolingo could become an even more helpful resource in your classroom. :)

Thanks for the input! i'll give it a try! Ps: it worked like a charm!

I tried doing a lesson and i didn't notice any change in their experience. Is this going to affect their tree? I'd like to use this to help them keep their tree golden while moving forward on it. If they get points for this, it will be awesome. if that becomes a reality, it might be a good idea to have another functionality: to exclude students who weren't present for the given lesson

Glad to hear it worked!

Awarding points to students who participate in the classroom practice session is a great idea! At the moment, students will not gain points through classroom practice, mostly because right now, we don't know who is actually participating in the lesson. We will revisit classroom practice in a little while to see what we can improve, and keeping track of who is present for the session sounds like a great addition!

I have the same problem as SilasCouto. I changed my language to be the same as the students (Italian), and then I had no Classroom Button on my Dashboard. :(

Thanks for your help! I LOVE Duolingo!

yes, please fix this issue. I use duolingo to personally improve my language skill in Portuguese, but as an English teacher, I am using it to teach to my Portuguese students. i would like to have access to this button without changing the language interface.

The classroom practice button is greyed out for me as well. :-(

Unfortunately, the button will only work for classrooms with a single learning language, otherwise we don't know what language to generate a session for. You can edit the classroom language in the classroom settings. :)

Thank you for replying. Is there a way for the same students to be in multiple classrooms? For example, if a student is learning both Swedish and Spanish, can they be in both classrooms?

Not right now, but we'd like to add this functionality very soon!

Thank you. This would be especially helpful for those of us who are using Duolingo as a homeschooling aid.

Grey although i only habe a single learning language. All my students are learning english.

The reason the button is grey for you is that our current implementation of the classroom practice session is hesitant to generate a session for you if you are using Duolingo in a different language from your students, because it's not clear if the instructions should say "Traduza esta frase" or "Translate this sentence", for example.

I'm sorry for the confusion! I just edited the announcement to include this information, and we'll work on better feedback directly in the dashboard so you can easily see why classroom practice is not available to you.

How is the practice level determined? Is it an average of the classes progress? Or is there a way to customize/set this?

May 20, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/erdnuss

It is more or less an average of the classroom's progress at the moment, but future versions may be customizable. What kind of customization options would you be interested in?

May 20, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/montraydavis

XP Goal / Lesson goal

Required students to meet a specific XP point, or number of lessons in a specific time frame.

Homework

Homework in a sense that we can require specific lessons to be completed on school-nights, and ready for review when they return to class.

Quizzes

Quiz students on material covered. (Basically progress quiz, but customizable for the class to take, and teacher to review)

Projects

Maybe something like immersion for the class where you have to put together a certain document with images, and translate it to the country in which you are studying, or whatever the topic is for that matter.

Detailed student data

Even though I can see which areas students are doing well at, I can't really see what they are getting wrong. It would be nice to know what areas need to be improved on, versus having to quiz them over the material in paper form.

Those are just a few things I can come up with on the spot :p

Duolingo already has more than one can ask for, so I really appreciate you taking the time to allow for me to help pave the way for next generation learning with Duolingo! I really look forward to an even better learning experience than the one already being provided. Thanks so much! :D

My condolences, ~~Montray

Hey everyone! First I love duolingo! Second, I'm can't seem to figure out how to use the classroom practice button. I followed the directions below, by making my only learning language Spanish as my students and refreshed, but still nothing.

Any suggestions? My students actually asked me for a feature like this last school year so I would definitely love to try it. Thank you in advance.

July 30, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/erdnuss

So sorry for the late reply! I checked out your account and it turns out that none of your students have any progress in Spanish. Our current implementation requires that at least one student in the classroom must have started learning the classroom language, i.e., must have earned at least one XP in the language. We will have a way to launch sample lessons very soon though!

I just started using this today with my level 2 students. They really like it. If there was a way for me to pre- select topics for the power session that would be helpful so that I am not repeating the same material again and again.

Is there a way for the classroom activities to show up on the students devices, instead of projecting the teacher's device for the whole class to see?

I teach several classes, is there a way to easily switch back and forth? For example I teach English from French and French from English. I'm excited to start implementing duolingo in my courses!

Hi, I'm new to duolingo, and very excited about the possibilities it seems to offer. I teach Spanish levels 1 and 2 in a middle school in Massachusetts. This said, I'm a little bit lost trying to navigate the website.

So far, I created two duolingo classrooms for my seventh grade students (one of them is a lot more advanced than the other two) and I don't seem to be able to find the link to my dashboard.

Could you help me with this, please?

https://www.duolingo.com/Usagiboy7

Hi! Welcome to Duolingo! If you go to http://www.duolingo.com/discussions and look to the right of the page, you can edit your subscriptions to add the Educators forum. A Duolingo staff member checks that forum for new posts at least once a day to help answer questions. The direct link to that forum is https://www.duolingo.com/topic/909

To find your Classroom dashboard, go to the Home tab at the top of the blue bar at the top of the page. Once there, scroll down. On the Right side, you'll see your Leader board. Keep scrolling until you see Duolingo for Schools. Click the button that says "Take me to the dashboard".

Another navigation resources to be aware of is the Help menu. If you scroll over your username where it appears in the blue bar at the top of the screen, a menu will drop down. On it is an option named Help. In there is a section for how to use the Schools feature. :)

Good luck!
