Improve my listening..!!
i´m learning a lot, and thanks to duolingo and my so hard effort to take ventage of it i am getting a job as a interpreter, but, i have a little problem, i can read, write, and speak so good, but, my listening has problems, i understand the main ideas and i know what the people is trying to tell me but when i need interpret word by word in a large conversation i don´t understand each word exactly and i dont understand the popular phrases or jokes. it is important because i can loss my job if don´t learn about it. can you help me with an advice?
Congratulations on your job!
Well when you translate you don't translate word by word, you translate the ideas. So that is in your favor.
Listen to the radio (on the Internet), visit English news websites and watch the video clips, go to http://www.verbling.com/community and speak with others in English, find some practice partners via ConversationExchange, iTalki, WeSpeke, and GoSpeaky. Just practice, practice, practice.
Will you be interpreting from a specific dialect? If so, I would focus on practicing that dialect (British, American, Australian, Irish, etc.) if at all possible.
mil gracias..!!! i went to the web page you told me and it´s awesome... thank you, i gave you a lingot.!
It's a terrible idea translating word by word, you need to focus on what all is been saying and try to translate the main ideas of the conversation.
I strongly suggest that you listen to a lot of spoken English, the best way could be listen to the radio in the background whilst you're doing your chores and watch a lot of stuff in your target language like tv shows and movies. By the way, if you are willing to improve your writing skills as well, reading/listening to audio books is a great idea to increase your understanding of the English language.
Usually, what do you need to translate? "business" talk, neighborhood talk, music talk? focus on that detail, to get the "flavor? taste?" of the speach
