Lingot Store Idea.
Hey everybody, I thought maybe we could add short stories or books that would be adapted to your language level. So, if I had just started it would be a very simple book that only used the words that I had already learned. And if you forgot the word you would still be able to hover over it and see the translation. And maybe you could only purchase them if you have passed the first keyhole.
Most lingots I've seen at once, mind overload. I'd buy everything in every language had I gotten that many.
i wouldn't mind if people shared with me too. Please. surely someone with at least 2000 lingots can share.
That's kind of what the immersion section is for, right. There are articles (which can be stories as well). The complexity varies from beginner to very advanced. You can just read through them and if you need to know the translation of a word, just hover over it. If translation is needed for a whole sentence, you can click it. Either someone would have provided a translation, or the Duobot translation will be available to infer its meaning.
If these proposed lingot store short stories or content had accompanying audio they would be vastly superior to the immersion section though.
The TTS for Spanish seems decent enough but outside of the exercises, I think I would prefer the audio in movies, music albums, news and telenovelas (if not actually interacting with native speakers).
Ideally they would be narrated by real natural voices. Though all this is probably too much to ask of Duo at the moment. It seems they're focusing on quantity of languages rather than quality for now, though the quality is rather good!
It's not that - it's apparently something newer languages aren't getting for some legal reason. There was a post about it somewhere explaining it, but I can't seem to find it now.
I love this idea! I really would like to see longer sentences and longer texts on Duolingo (and not just in the Immersion section)!
that is a really great idea. One of the many reasons that it is so good is because then if it was a story about animals you would finally have a reason to say such useless things as I am a fly or my friend is a turtle.
I wish there was a way to put your ideas to make the site better and if you got enough votes they would actually start thinking about doing it and eventually they used the best ideas.
I am not totally sure... But it could just be people who have finished their trees or proven themselves to be proficient in that language.
Maybe anyone could make the stories, but others would have to proofread them before they could be released. We could all bring out the inner writer within us :D lol
Well you guys should organize it. Don't mean to sound conceited, but I spent the last four hours making icons for a test store that I'm making. I think I'm the only one who has talked about a store and is actually making an effort to create.
This "story for lingots" idea has been proposed a few times already for months, yet I see nobody writing.
Really? I haven't seen any other discussions on this particular topic. But, I think your right we should try and write something ourselves and then show it to the people in charge.
How about you give me the vocab words, I write the story, have it translated, and put it in my store.
I believe so, I have 3 original icons (with 4 colour variants) and 7 icons using Duolingo's art, with one having four colour variants. I'm now brainstorming wallpapers, I'm hoping to have 4 of them tonight. And then I'm going to work on on a new idea that's somewhat experimental.
And if the person gives me some vocab, I can churn out a half decent story to sell. .
Adding stories would actually be a lot easier than adding images, at least code-wise because the script itself could contain the stories, and they generally use up less space than images.
(Reply to other comment) I'm going to to try to make it without the code first, because the code is going to take up quite a bit of my resources, and I want to see if the store will be successful without it.
For icons, I'm going to post the PNG files on the discussion page, and have people download it from there. For wall papers, I'm going to have it link to my DA (or another site) where it will have multiple sizes for people to choose from. For the story, I think I'm going to link it to Google Docs, unless a better way of doing that comes
That's a good point. It is particularly difficult to create stories using limited vocabulary. But using a hint system would probably make it less frustrating, so one could actually add more difficult words, or words not covered by the language tree.
As to who should make such stories, I think the OP should attempt to make stories in their native language to see just how hard it is, and maybe encourage others to do so in another thread.
Possibly native speakers? Of course the content would still need to be proofread, and I am sure there would be plenty of willing volunteers. Since I write and edit, I would love that opportunity.
Yeah, math is pretty easy. It's when you get into chemistry that it gets a little more frustrating. But Algebra I and II and Geometry was fun! :)
Yeah, Calculus was pretty interesting, but everything that was in there I already knew. It was kind of disappointing.
You know, I never did figure out why they were talking about sin in my math book.
It kind of makes sense...... I guess so that you can apply math to any part of your life.
Great idea, perhaps categories of texts could be created such as recipes or procedural texts such as 'how to do something' to help duo readers make good predictions.
Wow...good idea! I'm making a new post and putting your link in. Not going to take credit but just so everyone can see this and maybe also the staff too!
Perhaps there's something I haven't understood here, but what's the point of the lingots? There seems to be a 'shop' in which you can exchange them for extra lesson content. But there are only two extra content packages (flirting and phrases), which you can pick up very quickly, - after that what are they for exactly? And what are all these shields and stuff - are they just pats on the back like you'd gold stars use to motivate a child. Grown ups don't really care about that, do they? Or, have I missed the point and they do something else?
I think that this is a great idea, especially for learning quicker and discovering literature of the language we are learning
That exists already. DUOLINGO STORIES!! (Which they don't have for the language I take.)
Extra lingots? No big deal. Just store it up in this comment. Don't worry; I'll make good use of it ;)
can somebody give me some lingots please? I really need them for DA BONUS SKILLS :(
It is not very nice to ask for lingots. And you already have 61 so you really don't "Need" them. If you really want more you should try and post awesome comments are level up!
