The intonation of this sentence sounds like a question.

Why is it 'de bal' but 'het voetbal'?

De and het voetbal are both used

  • De voetbal = the football / soccer ball = the ball that is being played with
  • Het voetbal = The game of football/soccer

Same with other sports De/Het: Basketbal, Volleybal, Honkbal, Handbal, etc

Thanks. I'll add it to my exceptions list. Is it perhaps because it is 'the game' of football ('het spel' van voetbal)?

I don't know the exact reason behind it, but yes since it is very plausible that that is the reason.
