Has anyone else experienced this class wanting exact literal translations rather than a statement of content to English?

Is "люди" a loanword from German "Leute"?

Absolutely not. Remember Slavs and Germans are both Indo-Europeans. Люди is to basic word to be a loanword (well how could Ukrainans call themselves before they met Germans?)

I don't like how this one translates. Is this something someone would actually say in Ukrainian, and it would make sense?

I'm wondering if it might be something like "guys, where are you?"
