In US English, we usually use plural verbs with police, as if we were referring to individual police officers, i.e. "The police want to know...."
Same in UK English, I think this is a mistake. Would only be singular if you specified 'The policeman/policewoman wants to know...'

This sounds too Swedish or English. In Danish you'd say: "Politiet vil gerne kende betydningen af symbolerne".
Sounds like a very danish translation of the english, annoying that it is incorrect.
