any reason "чи ви там?" doesn't work for "Are you there?"

Цей тип питальних речень не вправляється в курсі. Ми навчаємо англомовних учнів вживати типову розмовну українську. Ви можете пояснити їм цей тип питань у обговореннях речень, коли і як вживається ..

thanks for your reply :)

I am an English speaking student. I've taken some Ukrainian courses when I was younger, but I don't speak it much anymore :(

I can't understand your full explanation, but from what I can see - it's just not standard spoken modern Ukrainian?

Right. Rather bookish, I would say. Poetry, classic literature, formal papers like surveys can have it..

aaah. ok - same reason for "чи ти там" as well I guess?

Even though it is not in this course I wouldn't advise you not to use it in real life, outside of this course. To my mind, it is totally okay and you can use any of these two forms

I advise not to use it in the course.

Also, people in English also ask "You there?" as an informal to "Are you there?" but it is not as common as in Ukrainian, I think. I still think "You there?" could be added to possible correct answers.

I don't know how to download it, but I use this website: https://www.lexilogos.com/keyboard/ukrainian.htm You can cut and paste it into duolingo, it also helps you remember what the different letters sound like. Hope it helps! :D
