This piece deals with the transition from intermediate to advanced learner. The emotional aspect is sometimes relegated behind the intellectual one, but it's just as important, I think.

Excellent piece! Thanks for sharing.

I am not at the intermediate level but have experienced the mental constraints almost from the beginning. So much I`d like to say but cannot find the words or cannot find the words in time. However, the words are coming faster and faster and I know they will come. Perseverance is the key.

Yes, yes it is. And plenty of input and exposure.

The humble radio helped me A LOT:

Yes, I use the radio a lot. I like the article especially about the programs to avoid. The Spanish station ESPN is annoying because they talk over each other. Also, soccer games where the announcer talks too fast and heaven help you when there is a score as he will try to say "Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool" for as long as he can. LOL

Ha ha, yes, the Spaniards are quite famous for their inability to talk one at a time ;-)

Yes, I agree with the article. Listening podcasts and radio has helped me a lot. And I also avoid sports programs for now. I have a local talk radio station here and I sometimes listen to radio on the internet via http://TuneIn.com (actually using the TuneIn app on my smart phone)

I started with podcast services which have transcripts available.

www.newsinslowspanish.com for example is a most excellent service. It's subscription-based, but very reasonably priced for the wealth of information it provides. Well worth every penny. There's plenty of free demo stuff on there, so for anyone who cannot yet follow a Spanish news programme, this is the missing link that will get you there.

I listen to the free version of that podcast an it's Latin American counterpart. In general, I am at a stage not to need the transcription.

Here is another Podcast series that are free and completely transcribed. http://www.spanishpodcast.net. Again, I generally do not need to consult their transcription either.

If you can do without transcription it is better for you.

I've had similar experiences of that difficult bridge from intermediate to advanced whilst learning Welsh, but found them difficult to articulate as you have done so eloquently. Gracias Simone!

That must have been tough, considering Welsh is spoken by so few people, and since they are all bilingual, it's much easier to switch back into English when things get tough.

I've pretty overcome this hurdle now with my Spanish (though I'm still very much a learner), but I'm right back in the very same hole with my Portuguese, lol.

Perhaps you have trouble finding your true voice in Spanish because you express yourself so well in English :-)
