Weekly Incubator Update: Tracking Progress from May 17th to May 24th

Two beta launches!
The Ukrainian and the Norwegian courses are now in their beta phase. Congratulations are in order for the two teams along with team Duo! Eager Duolingoers have been so thirsty for languages that for the past couple of days they have literally been drinking from the hose. They have been crazy awesome - Norwegian & Ukrainian! Congrats, Alexis & flootzavut!

One Graduation!
It is time to congratulate the French for Portuguese course team and also Team Duolingo. Their course has just graduated from beta!

Approaching the one year mark.
In the first week of June, I will complete my anniversary of bringing these WIUs to you. It has totally been a pleasurable task because you - the community - are so awesome! At this point, I would like to hear your ideas about how we can make them better in the coming weeks. What would you like to see? What would you NOT like to see? All feedback/ideas/comments are welcome!

Median: Has it added much value?
For the last several weeks, the median value has been constant at "one". I am thinking of dropping it (and the mode) from our reports unless I hear a solid argument to keep it.
Edited 5-31: The median should have been zero for this week. Corrected.

Shhhhhhh....

Hey all,

You may have been wondering why everything has been quiet this week...well, I'm here to tell you that it hasn't:D We haven't been slacking off, just working on things that don't show up as course progress, like hints, and proof-reading, checking and changing and so on. It's best we do these things as we go, rather than translate in a mad frenzy and then have to go back and redo lots of it.

So, yeah...

Onwards!

amuzulo from Team Esperanto wrote 3 days ago:

Beta soon! :)

Our recordings are done and we're very content with them. Now we're just taking a little more time to make sure everything is ready for beta: proofreading, adding a few last-minute words, and editing our Tips & Notes.

Also, I'm proud to announce that almost all of our skills has Tips & Notes, so you can dig even deeper into Esperanto. We hope you can stand the wait as we also can hardly wait to release this course into beta for public testing (by early June, hopefully earlier).

If you want to get a jump start, join the official Duolingo Esperanto Learners on Facebook.

Ĝis baldaŭ!

Soon ...

SergioRuido from Team Ukrainian wrote 2 days ago:

We are in beta!

Dear subscriber, the course is up and running! Here is the introduction post. And here is the Ukrainian Keyboard post (thanks, Darktroyd!) if you missed it. Welcome aboard!

Iorua from Team Norwegian wrote 23 hours ago:

Thank you for all your help!

Hei!

We hope you have enjoyed the course so far. Some of use felt that the course still needed more work (mainly double-checking each other's work), but in the end we decided on an early release. Bear this in mind when you test out the course (it is a beta phase, after all), and help us by submitting reports. Now you too are contributors, and we are very grateful for your help!

We do our best to complete and improve the course. Note that we can no longer change the list of words being taught, and alter the structure of the "tree". Eventually we will use all of your feedback and release a second, improved tree. Until then use the discussion forums to give us feedback (and reports for sentence-specific issues).

We are considering extending our team, so if you are interested in improving the course, apply if you have not done so already. If you have already applied, we will still consider your application, but you can of course send a new application if you want.

Lykke til med norsken!

Vennlig hilsen Andreas, Aleksander, Luke og Linn

Nearing the launch of the reverse course - Hindi for English!

We just concluded our second AMA/AUA!

Thanks to all who participated and/or followed the post. A lot of thoughtful questions and great conversation. Enjoy!

TL;DR Two courses launch their beta - Ukrainian and Norwegian and the Esperanto team says "Beta soon! :)". French for Portuguese team shows its efficiency - they were quick in getting to beta and they have been quick in getting out of beta! Hindi to launch soon!

The next update is expected on Sunday, 31th of May, 3:00 pm UTC.

Well that basically described me for 10 months, you will power through. Or crack and take on another course. Who said you have to focus on one at a time? ;)

Heh, I'm in the midst of applying for a long term (study) visa and moving to a brand new continent, which requires a LOT of work, so I really don't have time for duo, and certainly not trying to power through multiple languages at once! But here I am, every day, every hour, every minute, learning things! (And looking for funny gifs to share, of course.) Hard to stop when it's such a useful addiction!

Thanks for the update and for your hard work! Could I just ask, is http://www.moviemap.me/duoinc/ down for you? It's down for me and a website checker said that it's down worldwide too. If so, where are you getting the data?

May 24, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/jitengore

Yes it has been down for the last few weeks :(

I go the http://incubator.duolingo.com/ to get the progress numbers. I believe I have a script installed that directly shows the percentages, otherwise one can use "inspect element" on Chrome to look at the progress bar displayed by Duolingo. If you need help, I can perhaps provide more details on your stream.

May 24, 2015

You can get it by going to the incubator page for a course and using inspect element. It's down for everyone.

Wonderful!! It's absolutely amazing to see this enormous incoming wave of languages approach. A very big Thanks! to all the course contributors!

I'm finding it nearly impossible to wait. The ones I'm most excited for:

  • German for French

  • Hungarian for English

  • Greek for English

  • Hebrew for English

Hungarian made a surprising leap for me, ever since I made a close Hungarian friend. ^_^

The Hungarians better get a move on. They've been awfully slow for the past months. I'm Hungarian myself, but haven't been selected to help out.

Median: Has it added much value?

For the last several weeks, the median value has been constant at "one". I am thinking of dropping it (and the mode) from our reports unless I hear a solid argument to keep it.

My vote is, of course, to keep it. Even if it isn't darting up and around and all over the place it's still conveying information. And the mean hasn't really drifted all that far from 1% IIRC either so is it really that surprising?

May 24, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/jitengore

Thanks for your input, HappyEvilSlosh!

The median indeed moved and has been 'zero' for the last week (my bad) and this week (tomorrow's WIU post). Let's keep it.

May 24, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/jitengore

Well, who in the world can ever spell Norwegian wrong? I wonder ;-)

May 24, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/G0108

I meant jitengore wrote it as Norgegian. Sorry if I was a little confusing

May 24, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/johnklepac

It should be noted that the dwindling average progress of courses isn't primarily the result of volunteers realizing they're not as far along as they'd thought (although, God, what's with Hungarian? Wasn't that at, like, 99% before?), but of more courses being added and starting off at 0%.

"we can no longer change the list of words being taught, and alter the structure of the "tree""

Incubator teams can't change their tree nor add words after release? Why not? If the issue is course stability, what's wrong with having a released version of the course and a development version of the course, where the development version becomes the release version when it looks good? Maybe I've misunderstood.

May 24, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/remoonline

I thought that's what they said with this.

Eventually we will use all of your feedback and release a second, improved tree.

May 24, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/Jepkatoj

Ohh I see. With the previous sentence I thought by that they meant the same tree minus bugs, but I guess they probabaly meant with additional content. Fair enough :)

May 24, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/Ontalor

I think development trees are actually a test feature that's been given to the German<>English team. They're going to see how well it works with them and then release it to other teams if it does well I'm assuming.

May 24, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/Kevinguy19

Hasn't the French tree done this before as well when they added multiple skills a couple months ago?

May 25, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/Ontalor

I think that was an internal update though, whereas I think now they're giving the ability to update trees over to the contributors.
