Swedish Music in Swedish?

Hi, I've been looking for some good Swedish music for a while now. I've been lucky enough to find some good bands, but I haven't found any that actually write songs in Swedish. There have to be Swedish Swedish bands, do you have any to recommend? I'm looking for rock music specifically.

Tack så mycket för att skicka denna lista med låtar, Sannah9! I liked Lasse Lindh the best -- he is easier to understand. Alla de bästa :)

No problem! :D You can find full translations for a lot of Swedish music (including most of the songs I suggested) at Unfortunately only one of Lasse Lindh's songs is translated to English there, though I've found it's a very useful site for learning the meaning of songs and finding new artists as well.

Thank you for sharing, Sannah9. I will look at that interesting Web site. Translating lyrics is very challenging, specially if one wants to keep the meaning, poetic style and rhythm of the original song. :)

Hi Janpot. My knowledge of Swedish is still very basic and I cannot understand the changes you made to my sentence, but thank you anyways! :)

May 26, 2015

You missed a pronoun and put the verb in the present instead of the past tense =)

The easiest way to thank would be "Tack så mycket för listaN med låtar!" = Thanks for the list with (the) songs!

Tack så mycket, Janpot! I appreciate your taking the time to explain your corrections. Have a great day :)

Hello there. I know of one song that you might like. It's by a band named Witchcraft and the song is Leva. The rest of their stuff is in English. I'm a metalhead so I'm not sure if the bands that I've been listening to will be of any interest. Leva is really bluesy and rock n roll. So you might enjoy that. Who knows maybe from there you can find other stuff.

Thanks, I listened to that song and I really like it. So I looked up the lyrics and I was wondering if you could help with a few things. First, what does "alla tankar bara regnar" mean? Also, what's with the "han som älska att leva" part?

Veronica Maggio! and Melissa Horn are my all time favourite Swedish singers who sing entirely in Swedish. Although I'd ideally like to find the Swedish version of Rammstein, these two girls really have nice and varied songs. And Veronica has worked with Hakan Hellstrom on "hela huset' which is probably my favourite swedish song atm! They sing pop btw!

If you would like to find the Swedish version of Rammstein, with lyrics ebtirely in Swedish, perhaps you should start to listen to Raubtier, they'd be able to satisfy your expectatives.

Lyssna på norsk svart metall, jag vet inga svenska metall/rock bander som sjunger helt i på svenska.

I'm sure there's more, but I think Windir had a lot of their lyrics in Norwegian and even wrote their first album in their native dialect. All the other Norwegian BM bands I like tended to write in English/I don't care much about lyrics in black metal. (Except Enslaved, because it's mostly intelligible.)

Oskar Linnros - Ack, Sundyberg

May 25, 2015

one of my favourite swedish songs: Bob Hund - Tinnitus i Hjärtat

some hiphop: Mange Schmidt JazzAttacks

but for language-learning it's often good to look out for childrens songs, maybe like the opening-song of the adventures of the gummi bears (bumbibjörnarna): :-)

Rock is quite wide as a genre, here are some "rock" groups with Swedish lyrics that I like:

Ebba Grön // Imperiet

Those are 2 classic punk rock bands, I'd recommend "beväpna er", easy, repetitive and very polemic lyrics that will bring even the quiet Swedes into a conversation =D Dia psalma is also a good punk rock band

Gyllene tider

a famous pop-rock band that sings in Swedish, consisting of 1 member from Roxette (Per Gessle) and a bunch of people nobody knows who they are.

more metal than rock, but still good. I think Carolus Rex is the only album in Swedish however.

not really rock but because of this it may be easier to hear what she sings. She's really good as well.

General Knas // Syster Sol

Ok, so I totally left the rock scene, those are reggae artists, but still good.

Petter // The Latin Kings

Swedish hip-hop, in Swedish (But I guess hip-hop uses a lot of slang)

Just let me know if there're some lyrics you don't understand!

I beautiful cover of Kent / Utan Dina Andetag by Julia Westlin, a singer/songwriter from Sweden: (I'm hopelessly in love with her acapella covers as well as original songs, most of them are in English though..)

All the rock and metal bands I like from Sweden write songs in English, and quite American-sounding English at that... I'm actually curious if there's anything out there these days in those genres. I like a couple folk acts that are entirely Swedish though.

I've spent the last half hour racking my brain trying to think of heavier rock and metal bands which sing in Swedish and there are only a small handful that come to mind. Anyway, here are some suggestions (not just heavy metal or rock music).

Going back to the 70s and moving forwards there are some classic heavy metal and prog rock bands that wrote most or all their songs in Swedish.

November - Classic bluesy heavy metal (think Deep Purple). There are some newer bands like Abramis Brama and SvartePan that make music in a similar style with Swedish Lyrics.

Pugh Rogefeldt - . He's something of a grandfather of Swedish 70s prog rock.

Nationalteatern - Possibly the most political Swedish band ever and a real touchstone for a lot of people who grew up in the 70s.

Ebba Grön - The band that kicked off Swedish punk in the late 70s and early 80s. Members of the band later formed the influential band Imperiet.

A genre that spun off from punk rock is "trallpunk", melodic punk rock mixed with other influences.

De Lyckliga Kompisarna (DLK) - Dia Psalma -

In the late 80s and early 90s Swedish mainstream rock was dominated by some very cheesy singer/songwriter types, for example:

Mikael Rickfors - Niklas Strömstedt - Mauro Scocco -

Also worth mentioning an artist who made his career parodying mainstream Swedish culture at the time. Magnus Uggla -

Late 90s/early 2000s the only rock band with Swedish lyrics that comes to mind is the Gothenburg band Lok -

For current stuff I'm pretty much drawing a blank on rock music in Swedish, I'm afraid.

And at last I want to recommend two artists because I think they may be good stepping stones for the Swedish language:

Cornelis Vreeswijk - Laleh -

Bonus round! Want to hear the Scanian accent (skånska)? Give these a listen:

Peps Persson - Svenska Akademien - Bob Hund -

edit: Wow, formatting on duolingo seems to require some manner of arcane wizardry. Apologies for the messiness.

Impressive list! Will have to check this stuff out.

One of my favourite bands is/was The Knife/Fever Ray, but they sung entirely in English. I think a lot of young Swedes are very Americanised, so much so that they prefer to sing mostly in English. There's Abba I guess...

But seriously, I would also love to know if there are any modern Swedish bands/singers who sing in Swedish.

Edit: Checked out Familjen, who I knew of before, but turns out he sings quite a few songs in Swedish (Scanian dialect). I could get into him and see where it leads me.

Thanks, everyone!

Kolla på Thåström. Jättebra musik och jättebra texter. :)

try giving Grimner and Vildhjarta a try

Sörskogen was a one-off Progressive Rock side project of Mikael Åkerfeldt and Dan Swanö. I personally love the song and Im a huge fan of both musicians so I wish they would write a full album or something but I guess for now we just have the one song, "Mordet i Grottan".

Hej, I love country music like Kaleo, I know they are Icelantic, I’m having a hard time find Swedish music like that. Would love suggestions. Thanks :)
