The obligatory post is here. Ukrainian is the fifth tree I've finished. And I need to say it was very enjoyable. I had so much fun using Cyrillic, I've learnt it a few years ago but since I've never actually used it my skills were a bit rusty. Now I am able to read quite quickly so I'm really glad about that.

I was also surprised to see how many similarities there are between Polish and Ukrainian. This was a big help in finishing the tree. Generally, I need to say that Ukrainian is a great, and beautiful, language and I'm definitely going to come back to the tree again and at least try to expand my knowledge with some other resources.

I'd like to thank all people who made this course happen. You've all done an amazing job!

Best wishes,

Marta

PS. I'd love to write something longer and a little more original, but it's 1AM here and I've just finished doing at least ten skills in a row, so sadly, but I'm too exhausted to do it. ;)

Зараз у нас є обидва золоті сови! Це моя перша а твоя п'ята. Зараз, нам треба відпочивати!

If that is more or less comprehensible it will be a minor miracle, and I am sure that I messed up the 'both' construction (or should've said у кожного? if I try and make it elegant I start mixing it with Russian...) but I had to try ;) - sleep well!

"у нас є обидві золоті сови" means "we have both golden owls".

"у нас обох є золоті сови" means "we both have golden owls".

Thank you! :D I have a feeling I wasn't using it right but I couldn't figure out how to correct it. I don't think I ever got the hang of that construction in Russian, either!

In Russian it would be "у нас обе золотые совы" vs "у нас обоих золотые совы"

The key is to match the case of the word "both" to either "we" (genitive) or "owls" (nominative).

Also, сова is feminine, so обидві/обе, not обидва/оба.

I can't really judge whether it's correct or not, but I've understood it so I guess that's a success here :P There's no rest for me though, I'm starting Norwegian, but I think I'll take it easy for now after all :)

Cool, good job! So you're a Polish speaker? I am a Russian speaker, which gives me a big advantage with both keyboard and the Ukrainian language itself (sometimes it just translates 1 to 1 as in Russian). Nevertheless, the languages are still different enough, so that I can't just take the shortcut :)

No, the Ukrainian language is closer to Polish than to Russian, although it uses the Cyrillic.

"From the point of view of the vocabulary the closest to Ukrainian is the Belarusian language (84% of the total vocabulary), then Polish (70% of the total vocabulary), Slovak (68% of the common vocabulary) and Russian (62% of the total vocabulary). For example, in its lexical composition the English language differs from the Dutch by 37%, and the Swedish from the Norwegian by 16%."

You can't really often see a word that sounds or is spelled exactly the same in both of them, but they are really alike (дім and dom, кіт and kot, моя and moja, студентка and studentka etc). Sometimes I didn't even see similarities until the moment I said those words aloud, and I've realised how similar they sound. (де and gdzie, хто and kto) Grammar is also not exactly the same, but there are similar things you need to learn, which would be weird for an English speaker (like for example: changing the verb form depending on a person) which are quite natural for a Polish speaker. :)

They share 60% common vocabulary.Ukrainian is a mix of Polish and Russian. It's basically a Russian language with lots of Polish loanwords. It's because Ukraine was part of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for few hundred years...

Russian is basically Ukrainian language :) It was based on Ukrainian, Belarus and Finnish languages. But it's amazing, that Slovak language has 80% similarity.

Or, to be more exact, Russian and Ukranian branched away from the common sea of dialects at the stage where it would be questionable to claim one of them derives from another.

What you can be sure of, neither modern Russian comes from modern Ukranian, nor the other way round. There was a lot of interchange, and many words were borrowed into both from Polish or through Polish, including "за́мок" which was a calque from German.

Did you type everything in Ukrainian Cyrillic or did you use the bug counting latin characters as valid answers? Impressive if you did it the former way!

I used Cyrillic. To be honest, I was so excited to finally see a non-Latin script on Duo, that it did not even cross my mind to use Latin characters :)
