The difference between tú and tu!

Tú (a personal pronoun) basically means you (informal) and tu (possessive adjective) basically means your (informal).

Tú eres alto. = You are tall. Tú y yo = You and I

Es tu gato. = It's your cat. ¿Dónde está tu libro? = Where is your book?

Exacto, en Español un acento hace la diferencia entre una palabra y otra, inclusive puede cambiar el sentido de la palabra en algunos casos.

Regarding placing accents above the letters, I found it helpful to add a Spanish keyboard to my iPhone. It's invaluable for speaking rather than typing.
