Slow and steady

Well, I finally got there. One completed and totally golden tree after 498 days. See, it's not just the speed demons who get the golden owl?

Thanks to everybody for the insightful comments both in discussion and in the lessons, keep it up, Duolingo will only get stronger and better with input from us.

Now, it's a matter of keeping the pesky tree thing gold and getting ready for a trip to Munich in a few weeks time.

Prost!

I appreciate your slow, steady victory. I swear most people rush through these courses in a few weeks and and up lacking the ingrained knowledge that it takes to have a really solid platform. To each their own though I guess! Well done mate.

Congratulations to you! It's very inspiring to see both the fast and the slow approaches pay off while scrolling through the discussion tab. I'm on the slow and steady route as well, though. Enjoy Munich and practicing German in real life :D

Yes tell all about münchen. I am thinking of flying for a long weekend in Germany this September. Direct flights from Dublin are either Frankfurt, Düsseldorf (which I visited about 10/15 years ago) and munich. So I am trying to decide which - in the end though price may :)

Of the three destinations you mention, Munich probably has the most to offer if you are only going for a short break and don't have time to travel around. At the end of September the Oktoberfest starts though, which probably will drive prices of going/staying there through the roof. Düsseldorf on the other hand is only a short distance from Cologne, which is also an interesting city to visit.

Mmh good idea about köln/cologne. Will look into that.

Congratulations!! Enjoy München.

Just curious, I see that you have a very long streak, why did it take so long to finish the tree?

If they are anything like me, they do a LOT of repeating lessons until the material is (mostly) drilled into their head. That's what I do. I could be a lot further into my tree than I am if I didn't do so much review.

And congrats! Have fun in Munich!

Same. All day, every day. ^^

Agree with contracteryin as that is what I do. Also I have other responsibilities and they sometimes get in the way so in my case, I sometimes just have time to do my XP for the day in review and move on.

If I were under 18, it would be a different story as far as learning and responsibilities lol.

I understand, I just thought maybe you had another system and I was curious. The important matter is to learn or have fun, not the speed. Congratulations.

I know I was curious too. I wish I could spend more time. I am so addicted and so in love with German. Unfortunately because of the responsibilities and the brain-power limit it takes a really long time. I have been telling about the book I just finished, Flirting with French. Very short (250 pages) very readable, humorous account of an older person in love with, and trying to learn, French.

Not to give away the ending or discourage (I read it for inspiration for my German study) it does become more difficult to learn a second language with each passing year (especially if never exposed to the language as a child/before the language cutoff phase). I was happy you asked the question of the OP (original poster) as I was curious too. I guess there are no shortcuts?

Just repetition and juggling the demands of full time employment. I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to the technical aspects of grammar and some if it still hasn't sunk in (but enough to get the tree done with a sprint finish).

I've also found that repeating lessons keeps them gold for longer which means I can concentrate on new stuff.

I've also enjoyed the journey, didn't really want it to end but looking forward to what comes next.

Munich is overdue a visit, I've spent the last three Summer holidays in Berlin and fancied a week worshipping at the altar of Augustiner :)

Augustiner, best beer in Munich! Franzikaner best wiessbier in the world!

There are no shortcuts, and I do each lesson about 4x. I'm not a speed demon, but I also don't feel that it's "harder every year" in the least.
