Haha, very nice. Great article.

Also, I can heartily recommend the book by Mark Twain mentioned in the article: "The awful German language" (http://www.amazon.com/The-Awful-German-Language/dp/3868200398). Even (or rather especially) for native speakers - you get a great outside perspective on how difficult it is to learn German. :)

I might get it... I've always wanted to read it :) Mark Twain is (or rather, was,) hilarious!

You can also read the text for free on wikisource: http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/A_Tramp_Abroad/Appendix_D Don't skip the footnotes by the way, they are pretty awesome.

My first German professor quoted that book....what's more, she was a native German!

Thanks for the article, I enjoyed it. I am not sure that I am happy about their recommendations on fluency. I don't think I can reach that level of immersion here at home.

Probably not... we can only try our best given a particular set of circumstances, and then tailor our expectations around them to make them more or less realistic. Setting the bar too high ultimately ends in frustration. In the end, it's always a compromise. Oh, and having fun with it is the most important thing of all, it gets us through the tough times.
