In a previous sentence "vesten" was used as "the west," but in this sentence "vesten" was marked wrong and simply "vest" was correct. Is there any way to tell when to use which?

"Vesten" is used to talk about "the western world",

"I vesten er levestandarden høy" - "In the western world the standard of living is high".
