First tree complete!
I've rushed through the German tree which has given me a real appreciation for the level system: the degree of fluency from simply completing all the exercises once over is minimal, and it's the repetition that's both the hard work and what hammers down the language.
I feel as though I've crested a small hill which gives me a good view as to where I have to go.
oolalalaa veery nice, congrats mister no pancakes, I hope you will get pancakes and more fluency in your languages in the future !!
I like what you wrote which makes me study harder and understand better. To win is not easy.
Congratulations mate! Fellow German-learning Melbourner here. Have you heard of Mundo Lingo, by any chance?
Would massively recommend it! Everyone's so friendly there and eager to help others learn. If you decide to go, drop us a message!
Praxis macht perfekt.
I feel that the total xp gives a better reference to how far along you are than levels do; to get to level 13 takes a fifth the time it would take to get to 25. So I will make that my goal from here.
Übung macht den Meister
Praxis is practice as in a Doctor's Office / Doctor's practice.
do you feel as though you can hold a basic conversation in German now?
I have also completed the tree but have trouble constructing my own sentences :(
A very basic conversation probably. I used to listen to some German music and that is starting to almost make sense (which in the case of Rammstein is probably a mistake).
How are you doing in practice sessions? I've only just started using duolingo, but I found that I had to slow down my tree progression. I have the feeling that it's pretty easy to rush through a tree without being able to use the language actively.
Duolingo doesn't seem to measure passive and active language skills separately, at least it's not transparent.
For me, if I use the general practice I do poorly, but if i go skill by skill I'm fine.
Hm, yeah, I've just started learning Turkish and have had the same experience. That's why I stopped my progression for now and focus on general skill strengthening. I find the tests for individual skills too easy, I can just memorize the answers. It's much more challenging when you don't know what the current phrase is just testing.
Just an idea, but you might want to reset your tree and restart it, use shortcuts to get started, and focus more general practice.
Also the timed practice function gives a disproportionate amount of points.
I was actually considering starting French from German which would be hellishly awkward but should push me to learn more of both.
I've been trying to keep the tree gold every day while still trying to advance..I think this is going to take a while!
Congratulations! What now?
What now? Go back and patch up my ungolded bits of course! One can't help but feel it is like playing whack a mole, but the constant repetition drives things in far better than going through the tree once.
I went through stages of keep everything gold alternating with periods of pushing as far ahead as I could. You may have a better method to gaining understanding as I am well aware of my weakness. Lots of practice and diversifying into other things like films and the immersion tab is my plan from here.
