Lost Streak: Aftermath & Thoughts

I give everyone commendation who has never ever missed a day of duoLingo! That is serious commitment! (Albeit, I'm sure some of us have used the Streak Freeze, lol. I've definitely used it a handful times.)

If you have been following my discussions and activities, I think I was on streak for about 52+ days? It was only after I drove home from my friend's wedding past midnight last Saturday when I realized I hadn't done a lesson. You could say it's been hectic in my life as I also had a giant presentation at work to get ready for; and I have been sick and unwell for over a week. Great timing ;)

And you know what?

I am so glad I forgot to do a lesson.

In my previous post, I was seeking encouragement from my fellow duoLingoers as I have been pretty discouraged with my French learning. I realized that with the stress from my secular work and my own personal life, adding learning French that week was an extra plate to carry - and that it was okay to take a break as I evidently needed it.

Lesson and advice to newbies (but really, more like a reminder for myself, lol):

Stop feeling bad if you have to take a break from duoLingo - we all need it. If you are like me and can't stand to be on technology all the time, stop feeling bad because there are other ways to learn French than duoLingo. Do your best to keep routine and do a lesson daily; but it's not the end of the world if you miss a day. Just pick yourself back up and carry on :)

The End. Angelène

PS: I am much better now, and ready to get back on duoLingo again :)

I carry a Kindle with the app. My streak has allowed me to GIVE AWAY over 600 lingots to other users who are just starting out, so they can take the various tests to baseline themselves.

Having a Kindle, or a similar device to have the app is a great idea. For myself, it didn't work as I hate looking at my phone sometimes, haha. It seems to work favourably for you - that's nice :)

Fully agree with the need for a break. I handle it by setting my coach to only one point. That way, I can upvote one sentence in immersion or re-do an easy exercise and meet the goal for the day. I managed a two week vacation last year with spending just five minutes a day handling that minimal commitment.

Yes, I have actually set my XP Goal on 1. It worked for a short period of time as I have many days where I don't want to touch technology - at all. lol So either or, I wouldn't be able to do it. Glad it worked out for you though! :)

Great post! Thanks for sharing it. I do get pretty panicked and anxious about missing a day, so it's good to have the reminder that it's really okay to take a break when needed. I had to do that with my HabitRPG because remembering to check off my dailies (not even doing the dailies, but actually checking them as done every day) every day was becoming overwhelming and frustrating and actually keeping me from getting things done and feeling good about it. Thankfully, Duolingo hasn't become too stressful for me yet, other than a few times when I've tried to push myself too hard and had to set some more reasonable goals. Completing a tree in a day, for example, if far beyond my abilities, despite my overly ambitious self-expectations. :P

You are absolutely welcome :) Most definitely! I completely understand about panicking and anxiety about missing a day, and becoming overwhelmed, frustrated, not getting things done and not feeling good.

I'm thankful I was unwell and sick for over a week as it forced me (and reminded me) to take care of myself. My job already consists of generally staring at a screen all day, and being on duoLingo adds to that screen time. I noticed I was starting to get cranky - and that is never a good sign - because I was getting addicted to duoLingo since it is so easy to do. (Nothing wrong with duoLingo at all though! I just can't be on a screen everyday.) There is nothing wrong with these utilities; but they are just that - utilities. Technology and its associates has a place and time.

And I understand about being overly ambitious with high self-expectations. Likewise, I had to set boundaries for myself as I truly cannot do everything that I wish to do. Keep up the great work! 64 days is an accomplishment, along with keeping yourself busy with other languages :)

Don't worry about it. I always get disheartened then I just remember why I'm doing this and that certainly isn't a streak to show off to people. I wish Duolingo would show you how many days I've done in the past 365 days. That would make me feel less bad when I can see what I assume is probably 3/4 days of the year.

I was initially disheartened...for about 5 seconds. haha Then, I felt relieved. I think the influence of some duoLingoers who have 300+ Streak was rubbing off on me as I wanted to attain that because I thought by going on duoLingo everyday was a success. You are absolutely right about remembering and reminding your motives. My progress was a success - not my streak. That would be really nice actually! It's a good idea. They are constantly improving the site so maybe they'll do that eventually? :)

"My progress was a success - not my streak." Exactement! Well said! The important thing is how YOU are progressing at YOUR pace for YOUR benefit. Others can inspire and motivate you, but you always prioritize what's best for you. Bonne chance!

Thanks for the reminder! Right now I'm dedicating myself to getting a least a 60 day streak. After that, we'll see, I probably won't strive as hard to keep a streak. How long was yours before you lost it?

May 28, 2015

I think I had 54? I can't remmy. For sure 52+, lol. Almost hit the 60, but then forgot. Short goals are good! It's all about keeping pace :)

After 60 days you'll probably have more motivation to keep it :P

I lost mine at 126 days x_x I finished my French tree not long after though, so 'ts all good :)

I no longer get lingots for a 10 day streak. Anyone know why? I've emailed duolingo 4 times in the last 30+ days but no response. My streak is at 583 days. Because of health there are long stretches of time when I only do a few minutes, but the streak and the lingot reward kept me going at my slow but steady pace.

I'm not sure if your question was answered. I see a comment was deleted. but now you have to do a seven day wager of 5 lingots in the store. you get 10 lingots if you complete the seven day streak, So that works out to 5 extra a week. Just remember to purchase right after you complete your streak.

Have a look to the explanation about that here.
Duo looks for things that works the best in average on every one. this not being on how users thinks it would work the best for them but how statistically they perform under one or another setup (=> A/B test to statistically compare both).

I agree. While I've been doing Duolingo most every day for the past few months, I've taken a short break every once in a while for various reasons. It's not difficult to get back on track.

For me, it's better to enjoy learning a language rather than being stressed about. The streaks are great for those who are motivated by that, but my motivation is more intrinsic.

May 28, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/angelene.ca

Precisely! Well said! I started not enjoying learning when I was starting to get stressed out by trying to keep the streak. No one wants that kind of stigma when learning a language.

Thank you. :)

I just started duolingo today. I'd like to keep that in mind if ever I get pressured. We all need breaks, right? :D

You have the best outlook about this whole learning process on Duolingo. The real key to success is to keep that outlook going each day. No matter what your day turns out like, you do your best doing what you can.

Absolutely NOTHING. Except one little numeral on your profile resets to "1" and starts counting all over again. It does not affect your tree, or your progress. As many people above have pointed out, it just "doesn't look as impressive".
