What is wrong about "De møtte ikke opp på festen"?

Both should work, but there is a subtle difference. "å dukke opp" is to appear. "møte opp", or just "møte" (and "møtte" in past tense) sort of implies that they were expected to come (for instance if they had a task of some sort)

What's 'ei'? De dukket ei opp...

'Ei' is another word for 'ikke'. I get the impression it's somewhat archaic in Bokmål, or at least very infrquently used, although it may sometimes be heard colloquially. Maybe some of our native Norsk speakers can tell us a bit more about it. :-)

Why is the "opp" necessary?
