REQUEST: Recommendations for Dutch TV shows with English subtitles
I'm looking for a Dutch TV show with English subtitles. Do any exist? I don't really care what it's about.
Dutch documentaries or shows (with English subtitles) about anatomy, physiology, chemistry, or microbiology would also be of interest to me.
Some people have added english subtitles to "Wie is de Mol" on youtube. It's kind of a silly show but I like watching it and I find I can understand a bit of what they say :)
Thanks! I actually saw that after I posted this and realized it's reality TV. I probably should have added that I'm looking for anything but reality TV. ;-) I might give it a shot, though. Who knows; I might come to like it. Stranger things have happened!
I usually don't like reality either, except for this show.
If you're looking for stuff about science, www.universiteitvannederland.nl is good, but I don't know if it has subtitles. TED usually has subtitles, though.
Edit: I finally had time to check and universiteitvannederland doesn't have subtitles.
Thanks for the suggestions!
Dutch TED events are a great idea, until I learn enough to not be completely lost with the jargon on the uni site.
Someone just recommended this to me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iakKFHazmoY&list=PL_zmWZLNxxkvSd0GpZ4zryKuol-h0Dlw0
Not exactly what I had in mind, but it's great for beginners and weird enough to be entertaining.
Check out Uitzending Gemist http://www.npo.nl/ . Hopefully available where you live. There are countless shows, most (though not all) with Dutch subtitles.
A few of my favorite Dutch TV series are: Andere Tijden (history), De Gouden Eeuw (history), De Muur (documentary short series), Labyrint (science), De Wereld Draait Door (highly popular live talkshow), VRijland (teen drama, but great for learning Dutch), Down voor Dummies (awful title, but good show about Down syndrome), De Urker Vissers (life in a remote fishing town where they speak a unique dialect of Dutch).
News shows: PowNews, EenVandaag, NOS Journaal, NOS Jeugdjournaal (kids).
Others include: Man Bijt Hond (unusual news stories), Wie is de Mol? (you already know about), Het Klokhuis (kids educational), Ali B Op Volle Toeren (rap music meets golden oldies), Natuur op 2 (nature), De Buitendienst van Nieuws Uit De Natuur (kids news and nature show), De Rijdende Rechter (people's court).
There's so much to choose from. If you come across any cool shows on NPO please recommend them to me.
There were episodes of a funny series of short films called Zaai (which was actually part of the show Villa Achterwerk) but Zaai is no longer available on NPO for some reason, however you can still find episodes on YouTube. Start here (I added Dutch text, but no English translation yet, to episode 1): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDhdj3Q6Q_8
Komt een man bij de dokter (Dutch jokes/crude humor made into comedy skits) start here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YOtbGmIqmE (This must be on another network. Not on NPO)
The Dutch language version of Despicable Me, titled Verschrikkelijke Ikke was fantastic! I enjoyed the movie better in Dutch than I did in English! It was on YouTube for a short time, but has since been taken down because of copyright infringement.
Alex Van Warmerdam's very strange film Borgman (2013) is available with English subtitles. Also look for his other films, including: De Laatste Dagen van Emma Blank (2009) and De Noorderlingen (1992).
I've added Dutch text and/or English translations to some Dutch videos on YouTube. Some I haven't reviewed in a long time and some I've forgotten to add to my 'Nederlandstalige filmpjes' playlist, but you can start here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEyqGi_Sd74 On this particular Dutch video with English subtitles, I added Dutch text to the comments section about a year ago, back when you couldn't do long comment entries on YouTube, and so the entries were all out of order. So just a little while ago I deleted them all and re-posted the text under a single comment entry. Someday I hope to clean up other videos I have worked on.
Wow, thanks for taking the time to share all of this. Your YouTube subtitling is very helpful and I think I'm set on films now. The website you linked is a goldmine.
Now I just need to improve my Dutch a bit beyond "ik heb de neushoorn nodig". ;-)
I'll let you know if I discover anything good that you haven't!
Hey Kamelia, I edited/updated my comments again. Man bijt hond and Komt een man bij de dokter, I always get the names of these two shows mixed up in my head for some reason. Man bijt hond is a show with strange and unusual news stories; Komt een man bij de dokter is a crude humor/comedy sketch show.
My favourite Dutch serie is Flikken Maastricht, unfortunetely, I couldn't find any English subtitled versions of it, but maybe you can give it a try in the future!
Netflix has a Belgian TV series called Salamander with english subtitles and almost entirely in Flemish.
Not on the Australian Netflik. Probably got lost on its way to Oz, most things do.
Zondag met Lubach has English subtitles for all their videos for season 6 and for some of their current season. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdH_8mNJ9vzpHwMNwlz88Zw
You can also try the opposite. Watch a show you like, and enable Dutch subtitles. Its kind of fun seeing Parks And Recreations with Dutch subs.
Just be warned, subtitles can be horrendous. I've watched foreign movies with English subtitles and they are not too accurate. I prefer to hear the Dutch with English subtitles because I can at least know that the Dutch is mostly accurate.
Also, a main motivation I have is to hear Dutch and be able to interpret what they are saying when it isn't a robot saying it, and also to familiarize myself with the intonation.
thats the risk always with subtitles, but it's not that big a problem. The problem for me is usually to initially get exposure to the language. Everybody speaks english to me here in the netherlands.
That is interesting to me. In Denmark (where 89% of the people speak English), you can ask something in Danish and get an English response.
Hey! There's a really great Flemish (Belgian Dutch) tv series on Netflix called Tabula Rasa with English subtitles and you can find really good Dutch (as well as English) subtitles for this show on https://subtitlesplus.com/ .
Another great Flemish tv series on Netflix is Hotel Beau Séjour, but I can't seem to find Dutch subtitles for it.
