The prefix 'Ytter'

So I've seen this prefix-word around different sources as I've been studying Swedish. I've seen it attached to words like 'rock' and 'öra', but as far as I can tell, it doesn't change the meaning of the word. I apologize in advance for likely butchering that, but I'm still learning. Maybe this is a question for some natives, but what is its purpose?

Tack så mycket!

Generally speaking it serves as the English, "outer".

  • Ytteröra = external year.
  • Ytterkläder = outwear.
  • Ytterrock = overcoat.
  • Yttersida, ytterdörr, etc....

However it can also be used as an adjective: [yetter, ytterst]. Or as an adverb "ytterligen" = "additionally"!
