Duolingo shows both spellings but do they both refer to the same game? Is one what I, as a U.S. resident, would think of as Football and the other Soccer? If they are the same game would one spelling be preferred over the other? I tried to search whether this had been discussed before but was unable to get the search function to work.

It's the same: http://lema.rae.es/drae/?val=futbol and it's soccer.
(American) football is fútbol americano/futbol americano.

I've always known the translation of soccer to be "fútbol" (Not a native speaker of spanish btw) and football is "fútbol americano". I don't know about "futbol", without the accent :/

If you stick to the rules of Spanish "fútbol" has stress on the "u" whereas "futbol" has the stress on the "o".
