The question right before this one had 'bolsas' as 'pockets' and yet in this one translating 'bolsa' as 'pocket' is incorrect?

pocket = bolso, bag = bolsa

I think this should be "A bolsa dela ESTÁ vazia "

Good point. I suppose "é" could work with one of the figurative uses of "vazio/a" (http://www.aulete.com.br/Vazio) but none of them seem particularly applicable to a bag or purse.

What's the difference?

What is the difference between vazio and vago?

More or less the difference between empty and vacant in English. There are some online dictionaries to help with questions like this: http://www.duolingo.com/comment/594701.
