What's the difference between mye and mange?

Mye is for uncountable things and Mange is for countable things.

Jeg har mange dyr. Sjøen har mye vann.

"He has got a lot of free time" vs. "He has a lot of free time" don't seem very different to me as an (American) English speaker.
